What rules should apply to data centers and other large power users in Port Angeles?

My latest newsletter breaks down what the Planning Commission reviewed on October 28, what remains preliminary, and what comes next.

What the October 28 Planning Commission discussion covered, what remains preliminary, and where the public process goes next

What happens after something leaves the garbage can, recycling bin, construction site, or shoreline?

That question was at the center of this week’s Clallam County Solid Waste Advisory Committee meeting.

We discussed everything from lithium batteries and sharps to construction debris, marine waste, and some surprising changes in the recycling data.

One of my biggest takeaways: a policy can have a good goal and still fall short if the system needed to carry it out does not exist.

My latest article looks at what we discussed, what we still need to understand, and what the committee actually did (and did not) decide.

The proposed 2027 Port Angeles citywide budget is smaller than the budget adopted for 2026.

The General Fund is larger.

Both are true, and understanding why gets at a much bigger question than whether one headline number went up or down.

My latest article looks at what I learned during the October 27 budget work session, what is driving some of the changes, and the affordability question I am still carrying into the next stages of the budget process.

There is no regular City Council meeting this week, but there is still a lot happening.

I recorded a quick five minute update on this week’s budget work, the continued Large Resource User discussion, and a few community reminders heading into Halloween.

Take a look if you have a few minutes.

The October 20 City Council meeting covered a lot of ground.

We heard Candelaria Industries present its concept for the former McKinley mill property, but Council did not approve a project, authorize utility service, or act on a land use application.

We also began the 2027 budget revenue process, considered how separate City costs add up for households, approved new utility rates after amending the stormwater ERU provision, advanced work with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, and completed the first reading of the Critical Areas Ordinance.

For me, one of the most important parts of following local government is understanding not only what was discussed, but what was actually decided and what still comes next.

I tried to do that in my full recap of the October 20 meeting:

I just published my latest recap from the Clallam County Marine Resources Committee:

Restoring What We Nearly Lost

This month’s meeting gave us a fascinating look at the work underway to restore pinto abalone in Washington waters, including growing restoration efforts here in Clallam County.

One idea from the meeting stayed with me afterward: it is easier to protect an aquatic resource than it is to restore one after it has been lost.

The article looks at what that means for pinto abalone, the work happening in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and a few other issues we discussed at the October MRC meeting.

Read it here:

There is quite a bit happening this week, and I wanted to give a quick look at some of the things I’ll be paying attention to.

Rather than summarize it all here, I’ll let the video do that.

Take a few minutes to watch this week’s preview and see what is coming up.

Dropped off my ballot today.

This isn’t about who you vote for or how you vote. It is simply a reminder to participate.

Voting is one of the most direct ways we have to take part in our democracy and have a voice in the decisions that affect our community.

If you haven’t returned your ballot yet, make a plan to vote.

Your vote is your voice. Use it.

I just published a new article following our October 13 Utility Advisory Committee meeting:

When Necessary Costs Add Up

Utility rates have to support reliable infrastructure and financially sustainable systems. But residents experience those costs alongside everything else in a household budget.

In this piece, I walk through what UAC reviewed, what the committee recommended, and some of the questions I’m carrying with me as the proposed rates move toward City Council consideration.

If you want to better understand the numbers, the tradeoffs, and why affordability is a bigger question than simply comparing Port Angeles with other cities, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it.
