What does public housing look like? There are many assumptions about what public housing looks like, so we love to show what it looks like here. PHHC maintains housing communities throughout Port Huron, and that comes with a responsibility to the people who live here and the neighborhoods around us. Our maintenance and staff teams work every day to keep properties clean, safe and well cared for. These aren't just PHHC properties. They are people's homes, and they are part of Port Huron neighborhoods. Taking good care of them matters to our residents and to the larger community.

Have you ever wondered what happens when an apartment becomes available? There’s a lot more involved than handing someone a key. Our teams have a lot to coordinate to make sure the unit is ready for its next resident. Our team inspects it, completes needed maintenance and repairs, and makes sure it meets applicable requirements. At the same time, our staff works through the established housing process to identify an eligible household that matches the available unit. It takes coordination between our office and maintenance teams, but the goal is straightforward: a safe, well-maintained home that is ready for the next resident as soon as possible.

Why is the housing waitlist so long? It’s another question we hear often. The simplest answer is that more people need affordable housing than there are homes available. A unit generally has to become available before another eligible household can move in, and residents may stay in their homes for many years. That means openings don’t happen on a predictable schedule. We understand that waiting can be difficult, especially when you need housing now. The waitlist reflects something we see every day: the need for affordable housing in our community is greater than the number of available homes. We continue to work with public and private partners to find new ways to create more opportunities for affordable housing in our community.

What are some of the ways funding for public housing is used here in Port Huron beyond making rent affordable for our residents? Think about everything it takes to operate and care for a home, then multiply that across all of the units and properties PHHC manages. There are roofs, plumbing and heating systems to maintain, grass to mow and snow to clear. There are inspections and repairs, units to prepare with fresh paint and updates when residents move and larger property improvements that need to be planned and completed. Funding also supports the staff and day-to-day operations that keep our communities running. We take the responsibility of caring for our properties seriously. We’re proud that our communities are well maintained, safe and places our residents can be proud to call home. Do you know how many housing units we maintain?

Where does the money for public housing come from? It's a question we hear from our community.

Public housing is a federal program, with funding provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In addition to the funding, residents pay rent according to program requirements. PHHC is responsible for managing our housing locally and using the resources available to operate and care for our properties and invest in our community and residents. That means maintaining buildings and grounds, making repairs planning for the future, keeping homes safe and managing the day-to-day work that comes with operating housing communities. There's a lot more to how public housing works, and we'll be breaking it down over the next several weeks. What questions do you have?

As students head back to school this week, we’re looking back at Summerfest and the many ways our community came together for residents!

Backpacks, school supplies, haircuts and bikes helped students get ready for the year ahead, while residents of all ages had the opportunity to enjoy the block party, meet neighbors and connect directly with local organizations offering resources and services.

Thank you to our community partners who showed up, shared resources and helped make Summerfest a day that supported and celebrated the people we serve. We're already excited about next year!

Summerfest is one of our favorite opportunities to bring residents and community partners together!

Families enjoyed an afternoon of activities, students picked up school supplies for the year ahead, and residents connected directly with local organizations offering resources and support right here in our community.

We’re grateful for the partners who showed up for our residents and the families who came out and made the day such a success. This is what community partnership looks like in action!

Housing is just one piece of the puzzle. We support programs that help residents build stability and long-term housing security. Through resident resources and support connections, we help individuals and families maintain housing and
navigate challenges that may arise. Housing stability is about more than rent—it’s about support and access to resources for the whole person.
