Adding water to a private well is strongly discouraged and, in many cases, not allowed under Maine law. A well isn’t designed to act as a storage tank. If the water table is low, any water added will likely drain away.
More importantly, introducing water can contaminate the aquifer with bacteria or other pathogens. For short-term needs, bottled water is best. Contact your municipality to see if there are any community water resources. You can work with a licensed well driller or pump installer to discuss emergency or long-term solutions, such as installing a cistern or holding tank system that can safely be filled with delivered water, or consider deepening or otherwise modifying your existing well. Find licensed professionals through the Maine Well Drillers Commission.

Every disaster starts and ends locally. Long before federal or state assistance arrives, and long after the news cameras leave, local communities and first responders are on the ground facing the initial impact and guiding the long road to recovery.

Each of our 28 municipalities has a designated Local Emergency Management Director (LEMD), and a handful are pictured here. They work hand-in-hand with CCEMA and many other partners, serving as the connection with municipal functions like the police and fire departments, public works, municipal leadership, public health, health & human services, and other municipal departments. Our LEMDs support planning efforts, training and exercise, partnership building, mitigation projects, public outreach, and everything else emergency management in their communities, in addition to leading incident response.

Whether they’re responding to an active crisis, planning for a stronger, safer community, or flipping burgers for their team, our LEMDs are the heart of emergency management in Cumberland County.

Join us in thanking your Local Emergency Management Director for everything they do!
