Culture Crawl takes place this week. The Salina Educators group will host sixth-grade students from Salina South and Salina Central for a fun, educational downtown event. Students will visit local cultural and educational sites, where they can explore available programs, resources, and future opportunities. Lakewood will be at the Salina Fieldhouse teaching students about point-source and nonpoint-source pollution in local watersheds. Please note that we will be closed for the remainder of the week to support these major events.

Lakewood recently assisted Friends of the River in sampling the Smoky Hill River and helping high school students experience real scientific measures to evaluate the environment. We took samples, flow rates, turbidity measures and discovered key indicator species. What did our efforts find? We found that the river water was pretty healthy and supports many indicators of clean water.

Join us on Wednesday, September 9, at 6:00 p.m. at Lakewood for a hands-on Prairie Bombs program.

We’ll learn about prairie seeds and the plants that grow on the Kansas prairie. Participants will also make seed “bombs” to toss into their own gardens, helping plant seeds and support pollinator-friendly growth.

Lakewood staff have been working on conservation projects at Indian Rock this week, removing cedar trees and invasive vegetation from the hillside. During this work, we noticed a mountain bike with a locking cable that had been left at the site for three days. The bike has been brought to Lakewood for safekeeping. If you are missing a mountain bike, please call us at 785-826-7335.
