Proud to see our own Paul Ward, AVP of Safety, representing Intermountain Health Flight & Ambulance Services at the Association of Air Medical Services annual conference in Dallas! 👏🚁

Paul shared his expertise on an important industry challenge: how air medical organizations can better understand, share and learn from safety data.

By bringing safety leaders together around greater consistency and collaboration, conversations like these help strengthen the future of air medical transport.

Liam Downey, Flight Medic out of Cortez/Pagosa has over 1000 flights with Intermountain. If you’ve had the pleasure of learning from Liam, you might have heard him say, “Relax, everything is out of your control.”

One of his most memorable scene calls included a trip to the bottom of a canyon with minimal resources where the flight crew had to belay a patient 150 ft vertical feet 6 inches at a time.

Outside of work, you can still find Liam thriving and finding the calm in chaos. Liam is the Emergency Services Medical Chief for Burning Man. He has also taught wilderness medicine all over the western US and India. He was the first civilian allowed through the Airforce Arctic Survival School which included testing his skills overnight in -30F. How he made it? “You have to first keep a positive attitude!”

Liam leads with empathy and compassion and the advice he would give someone new to flight medicine, “It’s not about the high speed, it’s about slowing down and doing things right”

Innovation starts with the people doing the work every day. 🚁

We’re proud of our Flight & Ambulance Services caregivers who don’t just respond to challenges, they look for ways to solve them. Through collaboration with the Intermountain Health Caregiver Invention Lab, Espiritu Studios and BioHive, flight nurse Chris Andrew helped turn a frontline need into QuickSafe, a solution designed to support emergency medical professionals in the field.

A great example of what’s possible when experience, innovation and partnership come together. ❤️

Caregiver Spotlight: Joannie Williams, Flight Nurse & Base Educator

Joannie Williams has been part of the Intermountain Flight & Ambulance Services team for 16 years, serving as a flight nurse and base educator in Moab. Throughout her career, she’s built lifelong friendships, gained unforgettable experiences, and developed a deep appreciation for teamwork.

One of Joannie’s favorite parts of the job is responding to backcountry rescues, where multiple agencies come together with one goal: giving patients every possible chance. A challenging rescue involving a critically injured BASE jumper near Moab stands out as a powerful example of the collaboration, trust, and dedication that make this work so meaningful.

Outside of work, Joannie enjoys mountain biking with her dog, Sprocket, and adventuring with her husband, who also flies for Intermountain Life Flight. This year, she’s celebrating two exciting milestones: turning 50 and becoming a grandmother for the first time.

Reflecting on her career, Joannie says the job has filled her heart and broken it in equal measure, giving her a deep appreciation for life and the privilege of being there for people on some of their hardest days.

Thank you, Joannie, for the compassion, expertise, and dedication you bring to our patients and communities every day. 💙

As we begin a new chapter as Intermountain Health Flight & Ambulance Services, we’re proud to continue providing the critical care transport our communities have trusted for nearly 50 years.

With a faster helicopter and one fully integrated Intermountain team, we’re strengthening our ability to bring lifesaving care to patients across Montana, northern Wyoming, and the western Dakotas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
