Is music theory essential for musicians?

Michael Dvoskin explains how theory helps students understand how music is constructed, learn pieces faster, and connect each composition to its historical background.

Is musical success based only on talent? We don’t believe so.

Strong musicianship develops through systematic training, consistent practice, skilled teaching, and time. Conservatory-style education gives students a complete foundation in technique, music reading, theory, ear training, repertoire, and performance.

Our goal at K&M Music School is to develop confident musicians and lifelong music lovers.

What a difference 12 years can make! 🎹

In 2014, these two young students were discovering rhythm with their first percussion instruments. In 2026, they are confident young musicians performing at the piano.

Watching students grow over many years is one of the most meaningful parts of teaching music. Their journey reflects years of lessons, practice, performances, encouragement, and dedication.

We are so proud of the musicians and young people they have become.

Learning to play an instrument is only one part of becoming a musician.

Music theory helps students understand rhythm, notation, harmony, musical structure and how their instrument works. That understanding improves reading, listening, practicing and performing.

At K&M Music School, students can combine private instruction with music theory, solfeggio, ear training, music history, ensemble work and performance through our comprehensive 9-Year Music Program.

Students enroll one school year at a time, receive grades in each discipline and earn a certificate of completion each year.
