Today, I want to take a moment to honor a fellow horse therapy pioneer and a remarkable woman, Peggi, who passed away on September 6 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
For 13 years, Peggi owned and operated a wonderful therapeutic horse riding program, Pegasus Riding Academy Savannah, near downtown Savannah, dedicating her time, her horses, and her heart to helping others. She gave so much of herself to people who needed the comfort, connection, confidence, and healing that horses can bring.
Peggi and I only had the opportunity to meet once, but sometimes one meeting is enough to leave an impression. I immediately saw her zest for life, her s***k, and that unmistakable determination to live life fully. She had a spirit that was hard to miss.
Our programs may look a little different. I run a small nonprofit therapy horse program, Fuzzy Therapy Miniature Horses, where I bring my little horses to nursing homes, hospitals, community events, and places where people living with special needs can experience the calming and healing effects of these incredible animals.
But our purpose is much the same: to give.
To bring comfort.
To bring smiles.
To create connections.
To make someone's day a little brighter through the magic of a horse.
I am deeply saddened that Savannah has lost someone who dedicated so much of her life to helping others. But I am also grateful that people like Peggi choose to spend their lives making a difference.
Peggi, although I only knew you briefly, I am honored to have crossed paths with you. Your work mattered. Your kindness mattered. The lives you touched mattered.
I hope that as I continue my own journey with my little horses, I can live up to the example you set and carry forward even a small piece of the legacy you leave behind.
