The Statesville Fire Department responded to 583 calls for service in May - bringing the year-to-date total to 2,890.

Crews completed 7,438 training hours and conducted 79 fire & life safety inspections during the month.

May also marked a special milestone as the Department celebrated 150 years of service excellence to the Statesville community.

🎇 Fireworks Safety

Fireworks may be a summer tradition, but they can also cause serious injuries when not used responsibly.

𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬
Thousands of people across the United States are injured by fireworks each year. Burns to the hands, face, and eyes are among the most common injuries, and children are especially vulnerable.

Even sparklers can be dangerous. They burn at temperatures exceeding 1,200°F - hot enough to melt some metals and cause severe burns.

𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬
🔻Use fireworks only outdoors in a clear, open area
🔻Keep spectators a safe distance away and never relight fireworks that fail to ignite
🔻Have a bucket of water or garden hose nearby

🚒 What an incredible weekend at the Fire Truck Festival!

The Statesville Fire Department was honored to participate in this year's event at the N.C. Transportation Museum alongside so many outstanding fire and life safety partners from across the region. An estimated 4,000 visitors attended the festival, and we had the privilege of teaching children and families about one of the most important life-saving skills they can learn: when and how to call 9-1-1.

The Education Station was packed with hands-on activities covering home fire safety, meeting places, smoke alarms, firefighter gear, child passenger safety, burn prevention, lithium-ion battery safety, and more. It was amazing to see children learning through play while parents picked up valuable safety information they can use at home.

A huge thank you to the North Carolina Transportation Museum for hosting another outstanding event and to all our partner agencies who helped make safety education fun, interactive, and memorable for thousands of families. When fire departments, healthcare partners, and safety organizations work together, we build safer communities for everyone.

The City of Statesville NC is once again rallying the community to help local students start the school year prepared and ready to learn.

Beginning June 17 and continuing through July 24, residents are encouraged to donate school supplies at collection sites throughout the city. Donations will support the Village Intervention Partnership's (VIP) annual backpack giveaway during the 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Statesville Event Center.

The school supply drive aims to ease the financial burden on families while ensuring students have the tools they need for a successful school year. By working together, community members can help local students begin the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Community members are encouraged to donate new school supplies such as:

The 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥, part of 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞'𝐬 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝟐𝟓𝟎 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, honors the people, stories, and traditions that have shaped our community and our nation. The festival will feature historical exhibits, live entertainment, cultural displays, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to connect with local organizations.

As part of the festival, the City of Statesville's school supply drive will support the Village Intervention Partnership's (VIP) annual backpack giveaway, helping local students prepare for the upcoming school year. School supplies collected through the drive will be used to fill backpacks distributed to students and families attending the event.

By combining the school supply drive with the Statesville Heritage Festival, the city and its community partners are celebrating our shared history while investing in the next generation.

Residents are encouraged to mark their calendars for the 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 on Saturday, August 1, at the Statesville Event Center. Additional details about the festival, exhibits, entertainment, and activities will be announced in the coming weeks.

Residents who would like to support local students but are unable to attend the festival are encouraged to make donations at any of the designated collection sites through July 24.

🎇 Fireworks Safety

Fireworks can be a fun part of summer celebrations, but safety starts with understanding which fireworks are allowed and the risks that come with dry conditions.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝?
Residents may only use specific novelty fireworks such as sparklers, fountains, snakes, and smoke bombs. Fireworks that explode, spin, or leave the ground are illegal to use or possess within city limits.

𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤
It's also important to remember that Statesville remains under drought conditions and Stage 2 Water Restrictions. Dry grass, leaves, and vegetation can ignite quickly from sparks and embers - even from fireworks that may seem harmless.

As pools, lakes, and recreational water areas become busier this summer, water safety should remain a top priority.

Drowning can happen quickly and quietly - even in shallow water.

Water safety reminders:
🔻Always supervise children closely around water
🔻Designate a responsible adult as a “water watcher”
🔻Wear properly fitted life jackets while boating
🔻Avoid swimming alone
🔻Learn basic CPR and rescue techniques

North Carolina summers can bring high temperatures and humidity that increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Protect yourself and others by:
🔹 Drink plenty of water throughout the day
🔹 Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
🔹 Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
🔹 Avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat
🔹 Check on older adults, children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable
🔹Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, even for a short time
