Head Start San Joaquin Over that time it has served more than 30 million children, including children and families of San Joaquin County.

Since its launch in 1965, the national Head Start program has been supporting low-income children and families with a comprehensive array of services designed to prepare children for school. The comprehensive services provided through Head Start and Early Head Start services include:

• Education;
• Health, development and behavior screening;
• Social and emotional health;
• Nutrition;
• Family goal-setting;
• Social services;
• Transition services; and
• Services for children with disabilities

San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) was funded in July 2015 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Office of Head Start to provide Head Start and Early Head Start services in San Joaquin County. SJCOE’s Head Start San Joaquin (HSSJ) program provides Head Start services to eligible children from birth to age five and pregnant women through a partnership with local school districts and non-profit organizations. The following HSSJ partners will provide direct services to children and families:

• Child Abuse Prevention Council of San Joaquin County
• Creative Child Care, Inc.
• Lodi Unified School District
• Stockton Unified School District

Working behind the scenes, they provide guidance, technical support, monitoring, and problem-solving to help keep our program running smoothly and effectively. Their efforts help ensure we meet program standards while supporting excellence across all service areas.

At Head Start San Joaquin, we value the mental health and well-being of children, families, and staff. We understand the importance of breaking down the barriers of mental health stigma and promoting social-emotional learning, healthy coping skills, and positive relationships within each classroom.

These photos showcase children engaged in activities that promote relationship-building, teamwork, emotional expression, self-regulation, and turn-taking through play and creativity.

Learning happens everywhere, and our 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 brings learning, support, and family engagement directly to where children grow best.

Through home visits and socialization experiences, children explore, create, build friendships, and develop important school readiness skills while families connect, learn, and grow together. From creative activities and outdoor play to meaningful family interactions, every socialization creates opportunities for learning and lasting memories.

Our 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 Component is more than meeting health requirements. It is a partnership dedicated to helping every child enrolled in Head Start have the healthiest start possible.
We connect families to health care and community resources, identify health needs and support timely follow-up, promote vision, hearing, oral health, and overall wellness, collaborate with staff, health care providers, and community partners, and support families in understanding and advocating for their child's health.

Together, we help ensure children are healthy, ready to learn, and able to thrive.
