10/12/2026

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which honors the original inhabitants of the Americas and their culture, history, contributions, and resilience, we celebrate the multiple tribes that call home.

Recently, the BTNEP staff got to experience the Indigenous community firsthand with our generous friends at the Pointe au Chien Indian Tribe! Tribe members Jade Bergeron, Jody Billiot, and Mr. Donald and Mrs. Theresa Dardar, spent the day with BTNEP, teaching us about the tribe’s history and traditions, and what hurdles they’re facing today.

We toured École Pointe-au-Chien, a French immersion public school that teaches local children standard French while incorporating local dialect. At the PACIT Tribal Center, Jody taught us about Native American pottery and other materials used by the Tribe to create art, cook food, and provide shelter. He also taught us how to make dream catchers from scratch! We ended the day with a boat tour, where Jody and Mr. Donald led us to a couple of living shorelines installed by Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, and they brought us to see areas of visible land loss, accompanied by firsthand stories of the land and structures lost during their lifetimes alone.

When the day was done, our staff had an even greater appreciation for the Indian culture that shaped so much of Louisiana’s history, and were left in awe of the innovation and resilience of this community. Thank you to Jade, Jody, Mr. Donald, and Mrs. Theresa for spending your time and sharing your irreplaceable culture with us.
