The Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) today announced a new set of Family First Prevention Services grants to expand programs that help keep Kansas children safely with their families as well as prevent them from entering the foster care system. The grants, which take effect in state fiscal year 2028, build on the success of Family First programs across Kansas, which have helped thousands of children remain safely at home while connecting families with mental health, kinship, parent skill building, substance use treatment and other supports they need to thrive.

Meet Antonio (13)! He enjoys building with Legos and learning new things. Antonio also enjoys history and wants to be an archeologist in Egypt in the future. His future family would be nurturing, structured and thoughtful. Could you be the future family for Antonio?

Do you know a young adult between 14 and 26 years of age who is currently in or has experienced foster care?

Encourage them to join the Kansas Youth Advisory Council (KYAC).

Offered by our friends at DCCCA, membership in this council allows youth to participate in regional council meetings, provide recommendations and changes for the current child welfare system, advocate for change in the legislature and connect with others at an annual youth conference.

Foster Youth Voice Month may be recognized in October, but this opportunity is available anytime. Learn more about KYAC: https://www.dccca.org/program/kyac/.

On Oct. 3, DCFโ€™s Community Engagement team partnered with the Shawnee County CDDO - Community Developmental Disabilities Organization for a fun-filled afternoon featuring resources and family activities.

The event welcomed more than 300 attendees who connected with 60+ vendors to learn about community supports available.

One highlight was a table decorating competition by participating organizations. The tables were even judged by local celebrities, Mayor Spencer Duncan, John โ€œThe Iron Manโ€ Cantrell and WIBWโ€™s David Oliver.

Overall, it was an incredible day filled with connection, engagement and community.
