There is no governmental entity – including the State of California or Nevada County – that has an obligation to provide libraries for communities.

The Friends of the Truckee Library is an incorporated, non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting our library.The Friends of the Truckee Library is an incorporated, non-profit, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting our library. It has been the historical role for the Friends of the Truckee Library to advocate for and raise the funds to sustain our library and keep it open. The Friends have been instrumental in securing 75% of the funding for library operations, through spearheading two sales tax campaigns that have resulted in 20 years of additional library funding. While Nevada County provides some staffing and operational support, they would not be able to provide the same level of service or additional enhancements without the ongoing support and advocacy of Friends of the Truckee Library. The Friends raise funds through used book sales and events to provide materials for children’s programming, community cultural events, adult literacy programs, and purchasing monthly best sellers which assures to assure that current literature is readily available to Truckee patrons.

Winter in Truckee means more time indoors, and our library fills up fast.

A larger library would give families more room for storytime, students a place to study, and anyone a spot to settle in with a book or catch up with a neighbor. That’s the future we're working toward ❄️.

Sometimes the smallest decisions matter most.

At the new Truckee Regional Library, community feedback is shaping details that will make a difference in everyday visits.

An accessibility advocate asked the team to consider caregivers of older children and adults with disabilities. An adult-sized changing table is now included in the family restroom design.

Feedback during a design review also prompted the team to enlarge the Spanish lettering on the entrance signage, helping make the welcome more inclusive.

These are two of the thousands of details being worked through as the plans advance, each an opportunity to design a library around the people who will use it.

Regional Library to this point. 📚

From assessing library needs in 2014 to passing Measure G in 2025, each milestone has helped move a shared vision closer to reality.

Now, design development and environmental review are complete, and construction documents are underway. Those detailed plans will guide the next steps toward the goal of beginning construction in 2027.

What happens when the power goes out?

Truckee has strong emergency services and community organizations, but it lacks a year-round, accessible public place designed to bring critical resources together when everyday systems go down.

Emergency-response partners helped identify that need, and it’s shaping the new Truckee Regional Library’s design: high-efficiency air filtration, backup power, resilient broadband and communications, charging, and accessible gathering space with heating and cooling.

These resources will be part of a place people already know through storytime, studying, programs and everyday visits.

A familiar place to connect, and a place to turn when the community needs it most.

PG&E’s planned Public Safety Power Shutoff is expected to affect Kingvale, Soda Springs and Norden through 7 a.m. Saturday, October 17. Timing may change, so check PG&E’s Outage Map for the latest updates.

Need additional support? Call 211 to connect with local resources, including possible assistance for PG&E customers who rely on electricity for medical needs.
