Can a tax bill change what buyers are willing to pay for a company before it becomes law?

Research co-authored by Eller finance professor Sandy Klasa finds that companies expecting greater benefits from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act negotiated larger increases in merger bids while the legislation was still moving through Congress. Competition among buyers strengthened sellers’ bargaining power.

The findings offer a look at how proposed tax changes can influence business decisions before the final vote.

Confidence doesn’t always come from having the right answer. Sometimes, it comes from being willing to get one wrong.

For Ethan Bohnert ’27, that mindset has shaped his experience at Eller. After finance internships in Sydney and Amsterdam, Ethan returned to Eller for the Master of Science in Finance program, where he’s continuing to build his skills, learn from faculty and connect classroom concepts to real-world finance.

His advice to other students? Keep showing up, keep learning and don’t be afraid of the hard parts.
