Utility Workers Union of America The Utility Workers Union of America represents around 45,000 members working in the water, gas, electric, and nuclear industries across the United States.

It is a dynamic, progressive union that provides workers a voice at work. The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA) is one of the most successful and progressive unions in all of the labor movement. We have around 45,000 members working in the electric, gas, water, renewable and nuclear industries across the United States. Our influence is not just felt by our numbers; it is recognized that the UWUA is both innovative and relentless in our interest in and ability to protect utility jobs, and the wages, benefits and working conditions that our members enjoy in their jobs. We are committed to a job well done and dedicated to improving the lives of our UWUA members and their families, indeed, all working families. The UWUA knows that our strength lies with our membership, so every decision we make, every negotiation we take part in, and every initiative we put in place is done with the advancement and well being of thousands of UWUA members, retirees and their families in mind. We have invested a great deal of time and money in a variety of programs, such as safety and health training, legislative affairs, and benefits plans, so that our members will be protected on the job and in their paychecks. We are extremely proud of the great advancements the UWUA has made and very excited about what will surely be a bright and prosperous future.

Hear from Steve Kowolonek of Local 600 about what’s important to him as we mark UWUA’s 80th anniversary:

“Our 80th anniversary highlights both our momentum and our opportunity. Organizing wins in right-to-work states show that workers still recognize the value of collective strength. We must keep expanding our reach while honoring our long tradition of strong representation and member support.”

Statement from UWUA President Slevin on the passing of Dolores Huerta:

"Yesterday we lost a pioneering labor and civil rights leader whose life's work transformed the lives of working people across the country. Dolores Huerta demonstrated the power of solidarity and collective action, helping workers win dignity, respect and a stronger voice on the job and in their communities.

"Her legacy extends far beyond the victories she helped achieve. It lives on in every worker who organizes, every union member who stands together for a better future, and every movement that seeks justice and equality. The impact of her leadership will continue to be felt for generations to come."

OCTOBER 29, 1889: Japanese immigrant and labor advocate Katsu Goto was brutally murdered on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Plantation owners hired men to kill Goto in retaliation for his advocacy on behalf of agricultural workers and for opening a general store that competed with the plantation owners’ company store.
Goto’s story reminds us of the violence faced by those who stood up for workers’ rights and challenged plantation owners' power in Hawai’i.

As we approach the holiday season, remember to take care of yourself. Feelings of isolation and loneliness can occur if you’re living far from family and friends or working to ensure everyone you love is cared for. As UWUA members, we can support each other through tough times. If you don't want to use one of our 24-hour mental health hotlines, you can also call 988 for help. Remember you are not alone, and your contributions every day matter.

“My dad prepared me more than anyone for the position I hold now. Growing up, he always taught me to work hard, stand up for what’s right, and be a voice for those whose voices cannot be heard. When I got the opportunity to follow in his footsteps and join the union, I accepted the job without hesitation. Now, as I begin my role as a steward, I look forward to carrying on his legacy and fighting for my union brothers and sisters.” - Elouise Wierenga, Local 107
