Today is National Heatstroke Prevention Day

Every year, children are seriously injured or lose their lives from vehicular heatstroke, and it can happen faster than most people realize. Even on mild days, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dangerously within minutes.

Here’s how we can protect our kids:
• Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, not even for a minute
• Check the back seat every time you park, make it a habit
• Keep cars locked when not in use and store keys out of children’s reach
• Place a reminder item (like your phone, bag, or shoe) in the back seat
• Act fast! If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately

Heatstroke is preventable. Awareness saves lives.

In the afternoon of March 12, crews responded to a vegetation fire on the west side of the Port’s turn around basin. Upon arrival it was discovered that an obviously habitable structure illegally built in the dense vegetation was fully involved. Crews stretched hundreds of feet of hose line and utilized pumps to draft water from the deep water channel to extinguish the fire. Thankfully, no person was injured due to the fire, but upon the fire’s extinguishment, an investigation of the area discovered many occupied homeless camps in the general area. The Fire Marshal was notified to address the high risk of the populated area in the dense vegetation as it presents a large potential for future fires. Fire’s Community Risk Reduction Division will continue working with Police Department staff and the Port to address the matter.

On Wednesday, March 11th, WSF units responded to Courtyard Village Apartments for a reported structure fire in an upstairs apartment.
Engine 41 (E41) arrived on scene to find the upper apartment fully involved with fire. Crews quickly deployed hose lines and initiated an aggressive fire attack while additional arriving units supported suppression efforts. Firefighters utilized ground ladders to access the roof and performed vertical ventilation to release heat and smoke, allowing crews to more effectively get water on the fire and bring it under control.
All occupants were able to safely exit the building prior to firefighters’ arrival. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. A total of ten residents were displaced as a result of the fire. The apartment manager stated that other units within the complex may be available and will work on getting the families housed. The Red Cross was also contacted and assisted the displaced residents for the night. Multiple West Sacramento Fire Department crews operated on scene, with additional assistance provided by the Sacramento Fire Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

🍳 Kitchen Safety Reminder: Grease Fires 🍳
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, and grease fires can happen faster than you think.

If a grease fire starts:
🚫 DO NOT use water, it will cause the fire to spread.
🔥 Turn off the heat if you can do so safely.
🧯 Smother the flames with a lid or use a fire extinguisher.
📞 Call 911 if the fire grows or you’re unsure.

Stay in the kitchen while cooking, keep flammable items away from the stove, and never leave hot oil unattended. A few simple steps can prevent a serious fire.

Stay safe!
