My bartending career may have been short-lived, but the good work the United Way of The Plains does for Wichita lasts far beyond last call.

Council Member Joseph W. Shepard and I got behind the bar at The Monarch Friday to raise money for United Way and the City’s Employee Assistance Program; supporting local nonprofits and helping City employees and their families through difficult times.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, donated, and trusted us with your drink order! Special thanks to Monarch Owner, Jen Ray, for showing up for Wichita. (There is a reason the Monarch is my favorite place in town.)

🚧 Friday Fast Facts: Don’t assume someone else reported that pothole.

A little confession: I once reported a pothole using a fake name to see whether it would get fixed without anyone knowing the request came from a councilmember.

It did. And that’s how it should work.

Wichita crews filled roughly 81,000 potholes last year. The City fixes most reported potholes within 24–48 hours, though timing can vary.

Our crews fix problems they find, but they can’t see every pothole on every street. If you keep driving around the same one, help get it on their radar!

Reporting is simple:

📍 Visit wichita.gov/report or use the City of Wichita app.
📍 Select the pothole category and provide the location, including the nearest address or intersection and which lane.
📍 Add a brief description and a photo if you can safely take one. You can also sign up for email updates.

If you’ve already reported one and it’s still a concern, send me the location and request number so I can help follow up.

Help us help your neighborhood. A quick report could save your neighbor (or you) a flat tire.

Report a non-emergency issue such as City parks or park amenities in need of repair, sewer stoppage, sewer odor, or a manhole in need of repair, street maintenance, problem with any trees or limbs throughout the city, water maintenance, and more.

A great day at the park starts with the basics: feeling safe, enjoying a well-maintained trail, and finding a little shade. 🌳

The parks planning survey gives us concrete priorities: 52% of respondents placed park maintenance among their top three priorities for the next five years, followed by park safety at 39%. Maintenance of trails outside parks was next at 22%.

The draft action plan also identifies more than 2,000 dead or dying trees creating safety hazards in parks and public spaces.

As a conservationist, I support protecting our natural spaces and taking care of what we already own. Healthy trees, safe trails, and well-maintained facilities deserve our attention and a realistic plan for ongoing costs.

I’m encouraged by these priorities and look forward to reviewing the full proposal. Good stewardship of our land and our tax dollars should go hand in hand.

What’s one improvement you’d like to see at your favorite Wichita park or trail?

It is no secret that our nation’s immigration system is broken and in desperate need of meaningful reform.

We need strong borders, effective immigration enforcement, and respect for the rule of law. But we also need a system that provides clear, reasonable pathways toward legal status and citizenship for those seeking to build a life in America.

The recent detentions of Rob Attar and Yessica Peña have brought these challenges close to home. These are two different cases with unique circumstances, and I don’t pretend to know every fact. But both are reminders of the lasting impact our immigration system can have on families, businesses, and entire communities.

I believe in accountability, but also in redemption, second chances, and the American Dream. Those values should not be in conflict.

I’ve reached out to our federal delegation to encourage meaningful reform and appreciate Senator Jerry Moran’s recent efforts to address immigration challenges in Kansas, particularly in southwest Kansas.

Immigration policy is determined in Washington, but its impact is felt in communities like ours. While I cannot change federal law, I can make sure the concerns of our community are heard, especially at a time when so many are left with questions and uncertainty.

We are a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. We can and must be both.

Happy Halloween Week, Wichita.👻🎃🍬

Let’s kick off Halloween Week with a little local history… and spooky stories from around our town.

Here are five of Wichita's most haunted places.

You might even dare to visit them this week…

1. Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre has been around since 1922, and over the years, people have reported unexplained footsteps and shadows, plus a former projectionist who may still be keeping watch.

2. The Murdock House at Old Cowtown Museum

The Murdock House was once home to Wichita publisher Marshall Murdock and his family. Over the years, people have reported unexplained lights turning on and off, objects moving, and even ghosts around Cowtown's historic buildings.

3. Eaton Place

Built in 1887 and formerly the Eaton Hotel. Stories say a woman wanders the halls, moving between floors. People have reported phones being taken off the hook and objects unexpectedly falling. Great place for a ghost hunt.

4. Delano District

This story goes back to the 19th century. Edward T. Red Beard, who owned a saloon, was killed during the district's Wild West Day, and people say he shows up sometimes.

This one hits close to home.

5. Henrion Gymnasium at Wichita State University.

The hall was built in 1921 and housed the gymnasium. However, there are stories of a maintenance worker who was fatally electrocuted in the building in the 50s, and people have said they see him late at night and in the early morning hours.

As we kick off the week, I want to wish everyone a fun, safe, and happy Halloween filled with great costumes, plenty of candy, and time with friends and family.

The Air Capital of the World knows how to put on a show. 🇺🇸✈️

From the Thunderbirds to the incredible aircraft that filled Wichita’s skies, a reminder that aviation isn’t just part of our history. It’s part of who we are.

In the wake of the tragedy at Stryker Sports Complex, the strength of this community is found in its compassion for those who are hurting.

Tonight’s prayer vigil was a solemn reminder of the lives lost, those still recovering, and the families forever changed.

May God continue to bring comfort, healing, and peace in the days ahead.

An honor to represent Wichita in Orléans, France, as our sister city celebrated the 50th running of the Courses de l’Indien!

First held in 1975, the race is the oldest road race in the region. This year, a delegation from Wichita’s Run Wichita joined more than 1,000 runners in the celebration, and I had the privilege of presenting medals to winners.

It was especially meaningful to reconnect with French friends I had the pleasure of welcoming to Wichita last year. Our sister city partnership is a reminder that friendship and cooperation transcend borders. In an increasingly connected world, these relationships build understanding and strengthen the bonds between our communities.

Grateful to our French hosts for their hospitality and the opportunity to represent Wichita during this personally funded visit.

Here’s to many more years of friendship between our two cities!
