Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps-WVAC Delivering exceptional 24/7 emergency care, education, and service to our community in Wilton, CT As our name suggests, we are a volunteer organization.

Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps (WVAC) is an emergency medical service that provides 911 emergency ambulance coverage to the town of Wilton, CT. We operate two state-of-the-art equipped Basic Life Support ambulances and a full-time paramedic contracted from Norwalk Hospital responds in an Advanced Life Support equipped fly car. All our vehicles are based at the Wilton town complex which is home to the town’s Police, Fire, and Public Works departments, as well as our own headquarters, which is easily recognizable as the house upon the hill behind the fire department. It provides a comfortable and convenient headquarters for our members. We do contract with Norwalk Hospital to provide daytime
coverage during the weekdays, but our members are all volunteers and cover the hours between 6pm-6am during the week and 24 hours a day on the weekends. During those shifts, a crew composed of a Crew Chief and a Driver (sometimes supplemented by a third attendant) work in conjunction with a Norwalk Hospital Paramedic to provide Emergency Medical Service to the town. We have roughly 50 members, most of whom are Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) trained to render care ranging from simple splinting of a broken finger to lifesaving emergency defibrillation using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Wilton’s police, fire, and ambulance units all play major roles in the dynamic of an emergency medical call. For all ambulance calls, at least one police unit is dispatched and often arrives before the ambulance to begin rendering medical care. For more serious calls, the fire department is also dispatched to supplement police and EMS. While most scheduled crews respond to emergency calls together in the ambulance, WVAC adds another tier to the normal emergency response system. We encourage our members to participate in a system we call “Neighborhood Response.” Most of our members are actual residents or daytime employees in Wilton and are issued pagers with which they can hear and respond to calls. If one of our off-duty EMTs receives a call that is near to his/her location, he/she is encouraged to respond and begin assessing and treating the patient as yet another layer in the medical care process. This multi-tier response system ensures that every emergency medical call that comes in receives the most rapid, effective response possible.

🫀 THE HAUNTED HEART! 🎃👻

Your heart works around the clock, and some of the things it can do are downright spooky! 💀

Here are some heart-stopping facts (don’t worry, not literally!):

🫀 100,000 beats a day! Your heart beats roughly 100,000 times every day, without you even thinking about it.

🩸 A highway of blood vessels! If you stretched out all the blood vessels in an adult body, they’d measure around 60,000 miles. That’s enough to circle the Earth more than twice!

⚡ Your heart has its own electrical system! Special cells generate the signals that keep it beating.

👶 Tiny but mighty! A newborn’s heart typically beats 100–160 times per minute, much faster than an adult’s resting heart.

💪 A muscle that never takes a holiday! Your heart pumps thousands of liters of blood every single day.

👻 And here’s a creepy one: A heart can continue beating outside the body under the right conditions, as long as it receives oxygen and nutrients!

Safe care starts behind the wheel. 🚑

Driving an ambulance takes precision, awareness and practice. Our crews work on their maneuvering skills to help keep patients, fellow crew members and everyone sharing the road safe.

A big thank-you to Troy Haynie, experienced EMT and Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) instructor, who also provides training in New Canaan and Norwalk. EVOC draws on a national curriculum developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), helping ambulance drivers build safe driving skills.

Because safety is always our priority.

💀 BONE TO BE WILD! 🎃🦴

Think you know your skeleton? Here are some spooktacular facts!

🦴 Babies are born with around 270 bones, but adults have just 206! Some bones fuse together as we grow.

💀 Your skull has 22 bones, but only your lower jaw can move!

👂 The smallest bone in your body is in your ear. It’s called the stapes and is only about 3 mm long!

🦵 Your femur (thigh bone) is the longest and strongest bone in your body.

🖐️ More than half of your body’s bones are in your hands and feet!

🩸 Your bones are alive! Bone marrow inside many of them produces billions of blood cells every day.

🎃 This Halloween, get to know the skeleton that’s been hanging around with you your entire life!

Did you know that women are less likely than men to receive CPR from a bystander?

Research shows that women experiencing cardiac arrest in public are less likely to receive potentially lifesaving CPR than men.

Why? Studies suggest that hesitation, fear of inappropriate touching, and misconceptions about performing CPR on women may all play a role.

But cardiac arrest doesn’t discriminate. And neither should lifesaving action.

💙 If someone collapses and isn’t breathing normally, call 911 and start CPR. Your willingness to act could save a life.

Swipe through the images to learn the facts, understand what’s holding people back, and find out what you can do.

Every second counts. Every life matters. Neighbors helping neighbors.

Always training! 🚑

When we’re not responding to calls, we make the most of our downtime by practicing skills and learning from one another.

Here’s our apprentice Lila learning how to apply a vacuum splint, with a little help from one of our most experienced EMTs, Tom.

Vacuum splints are used to immobilize injured limbs, helping reduce movement and pain during transport.

Because being ready for the next call means making every opportunity to learn count!

Did you know the Star of Life tells a story?

You’ve seen it on our ambulances, uniforms, and emergency medical equipment. But have you ever wondered what it actually means?

Each of its six points represents a stage of emergency medical care, from recognizing an emergency and calling 911 to providing treatment and transferring a patient to the hospital.

And the snake wrapped around the staff in the center? That’s the Rod of Asclepius, an ancient symbol of medicine and healing. 🐍

💙 Six points. One mission. Helping our community when it matters most. 🚑
