It is with great sadness that we share the passing of retired Sergeant Larry Firman.

Sergeant Firman dedicated many years of service to the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office and the citizens of our community. Throughout his career, he was known for his commitment to public service, his professionalism, and the positive impact he had on those who served alongside him.

Larry passed away on June 2, 2026, at the age of 72. A native of Poquoson, he was a respected member of the community and will be remembered by many as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and law enforcement officer.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Firman family during this difficult time.

Sergeant Firman's service and dedication will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace.

100 Deadliest Days of Summer? Let's Change That!

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer because it is one of the most dangerous times of the year for teen drivers.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is proud to participate in this important safety initiative. Our goal is to turn the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer into the 100 Safest Days of Summer through education, awareness, and enforcement.

What makes this period so dangerous?

More Time Behind the Wheel
With school out for the summer, teens spend more time driving, increasing their exposure to potential crashes.

Inexperience
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, teenage drivers are nearly three times more likely than older drivers to be involved in a crash based on miles driven.

Distracted Driving
Distractions contribute to approximately 60% of teen crashes. Common distractions include cell phones, multiple passengers, and eating or drinking while driving.

Speeding
Speed continues to be a major factor in fatal crashes involving young drivers. In 2022, 35% of male drivers ages 15-20 involved in fatal crashes were speeding. Among female drivers involved in fatal crashes, 17% were speeding.

Impaired Driving
Despite the legal drinking age of 21, impaired driving remains a concern. In 2022, 30% of drivers ages 15-20 who were killed in crashes had a blood alcohol concentration of .01 or higher.

What can we do?
• Put the phone away.
• Buckle up every trip.
• Obey speed limits.
• Never drive impaired.
• Speak up when a friend is making unsafe choices.

Together, we can turn the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer into the 100 Safest Days of Summer. Every safe choice behind the wheel can help save a life.

A community connection that made some young people’s night!

We recently received this message from a community member and wanted to share it:

“These two deputies were awesome with our littles tonight. I wanted to share this one because the kids were so pumped when they came over to talk.”

Moments like these remind us that building relationships with our community—especially our youngest residents—is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Thank you to these deputies for taking the time to make a positive impact and create a memory these children won’t soon forget.
