Two of Sarah Baartman District Municipality's international scholarship beneficiaries, Sivuyisiwe Mapela from Makhanda and Siyabulela Loro from Jeffreys Bay, are continuing to make the district proud as they pursue their studies at Hangzhou Normal University in China.

The pair are the first recipients of a scholarship programme established through the long-standing cooperation agreement between Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) and Yuhang District in China. The initiative, which focuses on youth development and educational opportunities, was launched in 2024 and enables learners from the district to study abroad while gaining valuable international exposure. Both students are currently enrolled for Bachelor’s degrees in Economics, majoring in International Digital Trade and International Business.

Recently, the students participated in the annual International Students Cultural Festival hosted by the School of International Education at Hangzhou Normal University. Held on 20 May under the theme "Five Continents, One Dream", the event provided students from around the world with an opportunity to showcase their cultures, traditions, food, and lifestyles.

This year, Sivuyisiwe and Siyabulela chose to celebrate South African culture through sport, wearing Springbok rugby jerseys to demonstrate how deeply sport is woven into the fabric of South African society and how it unites people from diverse backgrounds. They also prepared a traditional South African braai, giving fellow students and visitors an opportunity to experience a taste of home.

The festival was a vibrant celebration of diversity and cultural exchange, fostering greater understanding and friendship among students from different countries.

In another remarkable achievement, Sivuyisiwe and Siyabulela, together with four other international students, were recognised as the top student leaders in the School of International Education. Having served as liaison officers during the academic year, they were acknowledged for their leadership, commitment and contribution to the international student community and have subsequently been appointed to new leadership roles.

Their accomplishments highlight not only their personal dedication and growth but also the value of international partnerships in creating life-changing opportunities for young people from the Sarah Baartman District.

Sarah Baartman District Municipality congratulates Sivuyisiwe and Siyabulela on their continued success and wishes them well as they continue their academic and leadership journey in China.
