Chile’s successful participation in IMARC 2026 reaffirmed the country’s position as a leading mining nation and a key partner in the global mining and critical minerals sectors.

Led by Chile’s Vice Minister of Mining, Álvaro González, and accompanied by Ambassador Beatriz de la Fuente, Chile’s public and private sector delegation participated in a dynamic programme of high-level meetings, industry forums, investment roundtables and networking events in Sydney.

Through presentations at key industry forums, including the Australia-Chile Mining & Investment Leaders Lunch, the roundtable on mining investment opportunities in Chile, and the Australia-Latin America Critical and Strategic Minerals Dialogue, the delegation showcased Chile’s mining priorities and investment potential. Engagements with major industry players, including BHP, further strengthened opportunities for collaboration.

The programme also provided opportunities to exchange perspectives with international counterparts, including Dr Mario Ricardo Thiem, Argentina’s Undersecretary of Mining Development, and Mayra Figueroa Valderrama, Peru’s Vice Minister of Mines, reinforcing regional dialogue and cooperation.

Chile’s active participation highlighted its commitment to fostering investment, innovation and stronger international partnerships for a more connected and sustainable mining industry.

On the occasion of CCAMLR-45 in Hobart, the Chilean delegation hosted a side event entitled “Antarctica, a Continent for Peace and Science”, bringing together members of the international CCAMLR community.

Supported by Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Programa de Actividades Específicas en el Exterior (PAEE) and the Council on Australia Latin America Relations (COALAR), the event showcased Chile’s Antarctic scientific work and commitment to peace, international cooperation and environmental protection.

The event featured photographs of Chilean Antarctica generously provided by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), alongside an audiovisual work by Chilean-Australian design studio Eggpicnic, celebrating the continent’s remarkable wildlife. The Antarctic Youth Coalition (AYC) in Hobart also contributed to the event.

Our sincere thanks to COALAR for its support, INACH for providing the photographs, Eggpicnic for sharing its audiovisual work, and the Antarctic Youth Coalition for its contribution.

Chile and Australia held their first Bilateral Antarctic Dialogue in Hobart on 26 October, bringing together representatives from both countries to discuss shared priorities and opportunities for cooperation on Antarctic affairs, in the context of the annual meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

As original signatories to the Antarctic Treaty and countries with a longstanding commitment to Antarctica, Chile and Australia exchanged views on strengthening the Antarctic Treaty System, scientific research and logistics, and cooperation between their respective Antarctic gateway cities.

The Chilean delegation was led by Diego Bunster, Director of the Antarctic Division of Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, accompanied by Juan Enrique Loyer, Consul General of Chile in Melbourne.

The inaugural dialogue marks a new step in bilateral engagement on Antarctic matters, providing a platform to deepen cooperation in support of Antarctica’s governance, science and environmental protection.
