Great care starts with a commitment to keep learning, sharing ideas, and finding better ways to support our community. ❤️

This week, members of our Home Instead Calgary team connected with colleagues from across the Home Instead network in Canada to exchange ideas and explore new ways to serve older adults.

From innovation in care to creating an outstanding workplace for our Care Pros, the conversations focused on what matters most: providing exceptional experiences for seniors, their families, and the people who care for them.

Our own Fred Franchuk, one of our owners, took the stage to share how we're serving Calgary's seniors and what exceptional service means to us.

We're proud to be part of a network that believes in learning from one another and continually looking for ways to do better.

Because when we invest in our people and keep improving how we care, our community benefits.

❄️ Winter can be a lonely season for many older adults.

Shorter days, colder weather, and fewer opportunities to get out can lead to increased feelings of isolation during the winter months. The good news is that even small acts of connection can make a meaningful difference.

Here are a few simple ways to help seniors stay connected this winter:

☎️ Pick up the phone and make regular calls to check in.

☕ Plan a weekly visit for coffee, a meal, or a game.

🚶 Stay active together with indoor walks, exercise classes, or mall walking.

🎨 Encourage hobbies such as baking, crafting, puzzles, reading, or painting.

💻 Use technology to connect with family and friends through video calls and shared photos.

❤️ Give back by volunteering or participating in community activities.

🤝 Prioritize companionship. Sometimes the greatest gift is simply spending time together.

Loneliness doesn't always look the way we expect, but connection, conversation, and meaningful relationships can have a powerful impact on a senior's emotional and physical well-being.

This winter, let's make it a priority to help the older adults in our lives feel seen, valued, and connected.

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals provide meaningful companionship and social connection, helping seniors stay engaged, supported, and independent at home. If you're concerned that a loved one may be experiencing loneliness or isolation, we're here to help.

Across the country, Home Instead teams are showing up with purpose at Walk to End Alzheimer’s events—walking in honor of loved ones, supporting families and raising critical funds for the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. 💜

We are proud to partner with the ’sAssociation as a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gold National Team. Together, Home Instead has raised more than $5.7 million over the past 18 years, including $258,000 last year alone, to advance Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

This year, we are well on our way to reaching our goal—and every donation and every step makes a meaningful difference. Thank you to every Care Pro, office team member, client, family member and community partner who walks, fundraises and helps move this mission forward.

When searching for a senior living community, touring more than one place can make all the difference.

Look beyond the amenities and notice the everyday interactions: Do team members know residents by name? Do they speak directly to the person who may live there? Does the community feel warm, personal and welcoming?

In this Caregiver Chats clip, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole Will share why comparing communities can help families find the right fit for their loved one.

One tour rarely tells the whole story.

When you’re exploring senior living options for someone you love, visit more than one community—and pay attention to the details that reveal how people are truly cared for.

Are residents greeted by name? Are conversations warm and personal? Does the team speak directly to the older adult, not just their family?

Sometimes the clearest answer comes from comparing how each place feels.

🌱Foyer and Front Yard:
The areas around your home can present safety challenges for older adults, especially when it comes to stairs, walkways, and outdoor access. A few simple improvements can help reduce fall risks and support independence.
✔ Ensure steps have sturdy handrails, ideally on both sides
✔ Repair cracked, uneven, or slippery steps and walkways
✔ Keep driveways and pathways clear of snow and ice
✔ Install adequate outdoor lighting, including motion-activated lights when possible
✔ Create secure outdoor spaces with fences, barriers, or comfortable seating areas
✔ Use doorbells with flashing lights or smart alerts if hearing is a concern
A few small changes outside the home can help older adults stay safe, confident, and connected while enjoying their independence.

Touring senior living communities for a loved one? Look beyond the scheduled visit.

In this clip from Caregiver Chats, Nicole Will shares why it can be helpful to stop by at a different time—like an evening or weekend—and notice the everyday experience. Are residents interacting naturally? Do team members seem calm, attentive and familiar with the people they support?

The right community is about more than the building. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel connected, valued and at home.

A scheduled tour can show you the highlights. An unscheduled visit can show you everyday life.

When you’re considering a senior living community for someone you love, Nicole Will suggests stopping by at a different time—an evening or weekend—and paying attention to what you see.

Are residents connecting? Does the team seem calm and engaged? Do people know one another by name?

It’s not just about finding a place to live. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel known, connected and at home.

When families begin exploring senior living, it’s easy to focus on the building first: the amenities, the dining room, the activity calendar.

But as Nicole Will () reminds us, the better place to begin is with the person.

What brings your loved one joy? Where do they find purpose? What kind of connection will help them feel known and at home?

In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole share a more person-centered way to approach one of caregiving’s biggest decisions.
