May 3 to 9 is Emergency Preparedness Week. Every home needs a fire escape plan.

Firefighters do more than respond to emergencies. They protect communities, support one another, and carry the weight of the job long after the call ends.
Today, we stand in appreciation of all firefighters and the vital role they play in keeping everyone safe.

Flood readiness starts with you. Even if you’ve never experienced a flood before, you could still be at risk.
This EP Week, understand your flood risk so you can take the right actions year-round to protect yourself, your home and your community.

There are many actions you can take to reduce flood damage, such as:
- Installing water alarms
- Foundation and basement window maintenance
- Elevating and moving your appliances and belongings
- Monitoring a catch basin

Flood readiness also includes knowing what your insurance covers, preparing an emergency plan and supporting flood resilience in your neighbourhood.

With spring underway, lots of us are thinking about yard work and cleaning out sheds. Please remember: batteries and pool chemicals can ignite fires in collection trucks and at the landfill.

Fertilizers can make these fires worse and pose serious inhalation hazards when disposed of improperly.

Properly functioning smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are essential for life safety. Take time today to test all alarms in your home, and ensure they are checked at least once each month.

Do you hear spring coming? Not quite? Maybe that chirping is your smoke alarm, looking for a little attention... :)

Check your batteries monthly and test your smoke and CO alarms. If the unit is chirping, make sure to replace your batteries. If it keeps acting up, consider replacement, even if it hasn't reached the expiry date yet.

With everyone home during March Break, it’s a great opportunity to develop or review your home fire escape plan.

• Choose a family meeting spot outside
• Practice your escape plan together

Daylight savings time starts this Sunday, March 8! When you re-set your clocks, make sure to also test your CO and smoke alarms, change batteries if needed, and replace any outdated or nonfunctional alarms.
