Indigenous Peoples have been stewards of the lands and waters in Canada since time immemorial, mapping this continent and building trading networks from coast to coast to coast.
Today, they continue to shape Canada’s future – revitalising languages, promoting cultures and traditions, and building resilient, dynamic economies for all.
As we mark the start of National Indigenous History Month, let us take time to deepen our understanding of the rich and diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, and remain committed to advancing reconciliation.

🎭 Looking back on a successful Guest Country programme at the
Canada’s Guest Country presence at the Heidelberger Stückemarkt highlighted Canadian theatre in all its diversity — including Indigenous, multilingual, and inclusive writing and performance. With over 10,000 people attending the festival, Canadian artists reached wide audiences and international theatre professionals alike. The programme formed part of the celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Germany.
🏆 A standout moment was Erin Shields winning the International Writers’ Competition with a play bringing hearing and non hearing actors on stage together.
A strong Canadian delegation met international partners, presented new work, and took part in panel discussions — showcasing what Prime Minister Carney has described as a creative, curious, compassionate, diverse, and ambitious nation.
Warm thanks to Theater Heidelberg for the great collaboration.
