As Fiji continues to experience the impacts of El Niño and prolonged dry conditions, communities are urged to 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗪 and prepare for possible water shortages.

The National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), under the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the Fiji Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, the Water Authority of Fiji(WAF), and through the Office of the Commissioner Northern Division, has been coordinating emergency water assistance to affected communities.

𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗬 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗗

Government vessel MLC Vatulawa has successfully completed emergency water carting operations to Cikobia Island and Naqelelevu Island in the Northern Division.

Over the weekend, following refuelling at Malau Port, the vessel resumed its operations to complete water deliveries to the remaining villages requiring assistance before proceeding to Naqelelevu.

At Naqelelevu, approximately 𝟱𝟱,𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 were successfully pumped ashore to support the community’s water needs.

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗪 – 𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗧 𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗟 𝗜𝗧 𝗥𝗨𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗨𝗧!

With dry conditions continuing, households and communities are encouraged to take proactive steps:

💧 Store water in clean, covered containers.
💧 Identify and secure alternative water sources.
💧 Conserve water and avoid unnecessary use.
💧 Prioritise water for drinking, cooking and essential household needs.

Government assistance, particularly to remote and maritime communities, may take time to reach affected areas. Communities are therefore encouraged to prepare early rather than wait until their water supplies are depleted.

The MLC Vunilagi continues to support emergency water carting operations across the Yasawa Islands, delivering essential water supplies to communities and critical facilities affected by prolonged dry conditions.

These ongoing efforts reflect the Government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable and remote communities as Fiji responds to the impacts of El Niño.

“The message probably from your national disaster risk management office and government, as a whole, is to just emphasise on the need to CONSERVE water, because we're looking at a prolonged event, and we need to work together and ensure that we look after the communities, our vulnerable groups, and essentially, to ensure that we get through this successfully. So it's a joint collaboration between government and the people”
