Really powerful and important letter from a young person shared by Care Visions Residential this
“It’s the relationships I have made with the carers that have made things work out so well.”
D was just 13 when he arrived at Care Visions.
He remembers leaving his family, the long car journey and not knowing where he was going. He was separated from his brothers, struggled with school and, when Covid arrived, couldn't see his family.
But alongside those difficult experiences, something important was happening.
He was building relationships with people who would be there for him, encourage him and help him find his feet.
Today, D has discovered a passion for mechanics, gone to college, secured an apprenticeship and learned to drive.
That last achievement means he can now visit his grandparents whenever he wants.
And the relationships he built along the way? Many are still part of his life.
D wanted to share his story in his own words. With this year's Care Experienced Week theme being Forward to the Future, it felt like the perfect opportunity to share his letter.
It's a moving, thoughtful and refreshingly honest account of growing up in care, the challenges he faced, the people who stood by him and the future he's creating for himself.
His letter is well worth reading.
