Liverpool Women’s has introduced a new specialist procedure to help reduce the risk of late miscarriage and premature birth.

The keyhole surgery, called LAP TAC, places a stitch high around the cervix to help keep it closed during pregnancy. It’s usually done before pregnancy or in the early stages.

This treatment was previously only available in Manchester, but is now offered locally at Liverpool Women’s, meaning patients can access expert care closer to home.

The team completed their first three procedures successfully, with support from Kenneth Ma, Consultant Gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Marwa Fakhreldin, Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine, said: “This is an important milestone for women across our region, patients can now receive highly specialised care closer to home, supported by our clinical team.”
