💚 A hospital procedure that once felt traumatic. This time, a very different experience.

For Sylvie, hospital treatment had previously been frightening and difficult. But with the support of Health Play Specialist Katie Friend, things began to change.

captured Katie helping Sylvie through a procedure, using a trauma-informed approach to play to help her manage her anxiety and feel more in control.

As Sylvie's mum explains, that support made all the difference. 💫

Katie knows just how important this specialist support is. It's why she nominated her colleague Alison Klufio for Starlight's Protector of Play Award, recognising Alison's commitment to making play an essential part of children's healthcare.

A few simple words from Logan that show just how much difference play can make for a child facing surgery.

Before his operation, Logan spent time with health play specialist Nicola Wright, who helped him understand what was going to happen and feel less afraid.

📺 ITV News Anglia visited The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn to see Nicola's incredible work in action.

And there's another reason we're celebrating Nicola! 🏆

She's our Starlight Health Play Awards 2026 Mentor of the Year, recognised not only for the difference she makes to children like Logan, but for helping the next generation of health play specialists do the same.

At our recent Parliamentary drop-in, we spoke to Paediatrician and Children's Play and Health Advocate Tom Rance about what needs to change to help more paediatric teams recognise the value of play.

From reducing fear and anxiety to helping children feel more confident and prepared for treatment, play can transform their healthcare experiences.
