From the Sundarbans to Switzerland: Carrying Bengal’s Artistic Heritage Across Borders. 🌺❤️
This Durga Puja, the creativity and craftsmanship of women from Swapnopuron Foundation’s Women’s Livelihood Programme have travelled all the way from the Sundarbans, Bengal, to Switzerland, becoming part of the celebrations at Swisspuja.
Rooted in the rich visual traditions of Bengal, the decorations bring together the familiar red-and-white gamcha, delicate kadam phool motifs, Jamini Roy-inspired folk-art elements, and a backdrop celebrating Maa Durga. From textile installations and handcrafted chandeliers to intricate decorative arrangements, each element reflects a thoughtful engagement with the colours, patterns, and cultural imagination that make Bengal’s festive traditions so distinctive.
At the heart of this project are the women themselves. Through their skill, patience, creativity, and attention to detail, they have transformed traditional materials and artistic inspirations into decorations for a celebration thousands of kilometres away. Their work is a reminder that craftsmanship is not simply about making objects; it is about carrying knowledge, preserving cultural memory, and finding new ways to share it with the world.
Through its Women’s Livelihood Programme, Swapnopuron Foundation works to create opportunities for women to develop their skills, express their creativity, and strengthen their livelihoods. This collaboration brings that work into a wider cultural landscape, recognising the women not merely as participants in a programme, but as craftspeople whose work has a place on an international stage.
