DID YOU KNOW..
Many Jamaicans are emphatic about making the distinction between fish and other types of seafood such as shrimp, lobster, etc when offering for sale or consumption?
In the culinary contexts, fish and seafood have distinct preparation methods and cultural significance. Many Jamaicana do not eat anything from the sea that does not have a vertebrae, gills and fins.
The broader category of seafood that includes shellfish, crustaceans, and other edible marine life are literally to be kept off the table.
For example, sushi (raw fish), or a seafood boil may include a variety of marine life like crabs, shrimp, and mussels which some Jamaicans may be allergic or may choose not to consumer because it is against their religious beliefs.
So, although fish and seafood are sometimes used interchangeably, the meanings are distinct in both diet, religion and culture.
