🌍 🇲🇹 OUR WORK GOES BEYOND OUR LOCAL BOUNDARIES – OUR VOICE MUST ALSO BE HEARD IN EUROPE!
🏛️ The responsibilities of our Regional and Local Councils do not stop at the boundaries of our communities. Increasingly, decisions taken at European level directly influence the quality of life of our residents, the sustainability of our localities and the future of our regions.
🇪🇺 This is why our international presence, participation and contribution are so important.
🌊 As the Port Regional Council, we are proud to present our position paper contributing to the European Union Strategy on Resilient, Prosperous and Liveable Coastal Communities.
Our region, encompassing Valletta, the historic Three Cities, Floriana and the communities surrounding Malta's Grand Harbour, faces unique challenges and opportunities.
🏘️ From demographic changes, housing affordability and gentrification to tourism pressures, environmental sustainability, cultural heritage, accessibility and social cohesion, these are not simply local concerns. They are European challenges requiring European attention and solutions.
Our message is clear: economic growth and development must never come at the expense of the people who live in our communities.
🌍 We want European policies that recognise the particular realities of small island states such as Malta, where limited land, high population density and competing demands on infrastructure and public spaces create pressures that are often different from those experienced in larger European regions.
Through our international engagement, we are ensuring that the experiences, concerns and aspirations of our residents contribute directly to European policy discussions.
🤝 We would also like to express our appreciation to Mr Anthony Chircop, President of the Kunsill Reġjonali Lvant and Rapporteur at the European Committee of the Regions on the EU Strategy for Resilient, Prosperous and Liveable Coastal Communities.
His role provides an important opportunity to bring the realities and challenges of Malta's coastal communities into the European policy-making process. We look forward to continued cooperation in ensuring that the perspectives of our respective regions are reflected in the discussions and recommendations being developed at European level.
🗣️ International representation is not about travelling or attending meetings. It is about making sure that our communities have a voice where decisions affecting their future are being shaped.
We cannot expect others to understand our realities unless we are prepared to explain them, defend our interests and put forward constructive proposals.
That is precisely what we are doing.
