As we celebrate National Flag Days, we look back at the different uses our national standard had through the flags in the NHCP Collection as our special features.

Today, we continue with the National Flag as a war standard.

𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗴
NHCP Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo

This flag is commonly attributed to General Luciano San Miguel, who is best remembered for continuing to fight against the Americans even after President Emilio Aguinaldo was captured. The inscription reflects his burning patriotism: “Long Live the Philippine Republic! Long Live!” It is possible that the flag came to the hands of Aguinaldo through San Miguel’s war commissary, Luis Javier, whose flag is also in the collection of the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine.

NHCP Museo ni Apolinario Mabini PUP

On 30 May 2007, Steve Bookout donated this flag along with old photographs dating from the turn of the century. Little is known about its provenance, although it is likely that an ancestor fought during the Philippine-American War and captured it after a battle. It has been displayed in the Apolinario Mabini Shrine PUP since its reopened in December 2025.

Sa parating na Hunyo 3, gugunitain natin ang ika-150 anibersaryo ng kapanganakan ni Jose Palma.

Kahit mahina ang katawan, sinikap niyang makatulong sa laban para sa kalayaan sa pamamagitan ng kaniyang mga tula. Sumulat din siya sa pahayagang La Independencia, kung saan inilimbag ang tula niyang Filipinas. Inilapat ito sa himig ng Marcha Nacional Filipina at naging batayan ng mga titik sa ating Pambansang Awit.

Upang ipakita ang pasasalamat ng bayan sa kaniyang ambag sa kasaysayan, magsasagawa ngayong araw ng pag-aalay ng bulaklak sa kaniyang bantayog sa Bautista, Pangasinan kung saan niya sinulat ang Filipinas. Dadalo si Tagapangulo Regalado Trota Jose, Jr ng NHCP.

As National Heritage Month 2026 concludes, the NHCP culminates its series on historical markers associated with the Year of Philippine Diplomatic History and Diaspora, under the Dekada ng Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas, by highlighting the 1987 historical marker dedicated to Carlos P. Romulo in his hometown of Camiling, Tarlac.

The marker honors Romulo as a diplomat, educator, journalist, writer, and public servant whose career brought the Filipino voice to the world stage, including his historic role as the first Asian President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Later NHI Board records show the continuing importance of the Camiling marker. In 1999, when a marker was requested for a Carlos P. Romulo monument in Manila, the Board resolved to use the Camiling marker text as reference, affirming its place as a key institutional text in remembering his life and legacy.

Romulo’s global legacy is further explored in the NHCP special and permanent exhibition “IMPETUS – Carlos P. Romulo: Architect of Diplomacy” at the NHCP Presidential Car Museum in Quezon City. The exhibition honors his contributions to Philippine foreign policy, multilateral diplomacy, and the country’s place in the community of nations.
