❗️ The Vatican Secretariat of State has confirmed that, alongside the five Pontifical Orders, only the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem are recognised and protected by the Holy See.

The statement, published on 10 October 2026 in response to numerous requests for information, reiterates a position previously expressed over decades and clarifies that the Holy See has no intention of modifying its policy. The statement also stresses the need to avoid potential misunderstandings and prevent abuses that may harm people acting in good faith. In this regard, the Holy See specifies that it attaches no value to knighthood certificates and insignia issued by unrecognised organisations.

Other groups, whether newly established or claiming to derive from ancient medieval orders, are not recognised by the Holy See, which cannot vouch for their historical and legal legitimacy, their purposes, or their organisational structures.

The Holy See emphasizes that the use of churches and chapels for so-called investiture ceremonies by these groups is inappropriate.

EN- During his working visit to Romania, the Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, HE Dr Josef D. Blotz, visited the Order’s Special Kindergarten (Grădinița Specială Malteză) in Cluj-Napoca, one of the Order’s longstanding social services in the country.

For more than two decades, the kindergarten has supported children with moderate and severe neuromotor disabilities, including children with cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorders. Working closely with specialised therapists, each child follows an individual programme designed around their particular needs and development. The kindergarten provides a form of specialised care available in only a limited number of facilities in Cluj-Napoca.

During the visit, the Grand Hospitaller met staff and volunteers and had the opportunity to observe their work with the children first-hand. Reflecting on the wider presence of the Order in Romania, Dr Blotz described its works and services in the country as a “precious stone in the Order’s crown”.

The visit formed part of a broader programme dedicated to learning more about the activities of the Order of Malta Romania and the services provided to vulnerable communities across the country.

The Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania expresses its appreciation to the staff, therapists, volunteers, and families of the Order’s Special Kindergarten. Through their daily commitment, the Order’s mission, Tuitio fidei et obsequium pauperum, is translated into practical care, dignity, and service to some of the most vulnerable members of society.

❗️❗️❗️ Official statement regarding media reports of a fabricated “Order of Malta” diplomatic identification card:

With reference to recent media reports concerning a diplomatic identity card allegedly issued by the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta in the name of an individual currently under investigation by the Romanian authorities, the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Romania wishes to clarify that the document shown in the media is entirely fabricated and has no connection whatsoever with the Sovereign Order of Malta.

The individual concerned is not a member of the Sovereign Order of Malta, and no such document has ever been issued or authorised by the Order.

The Embassy also recalls that the Sovereign Order of Malta has repeatedly warned of the activities of self-styled or “mimic” organisations which illegitimately use names, insignia, and symbols resembling those of the Order in an attempt to present themselves as legitimate and thereby mislead the public. Such organisations have no connection whatsoever with the Sovereign Order of Malta.

The Embassy has informed the competent Romanian authorities accordingly, and remains available to provide any further clarification that may be required.
