Pets age much faster than we do — which means regular health checks become even more important as they grow older 🐶🐱
Many senior pet conditions develop gradually and may not show obvious signs until later stages. Problems such as kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, and dental disease can often be detected earlier through routine examinations and blood testing 💛
If your pet has been slowing down lately, sleeping more, behaving differently, or having difficulty jumping, it may be time for a senior wellness check.
At MyFamilyVet, we offer senior pet health screenings, including blood tests, to help monitor your pet’s health as they age.

Ranger’s Story
Back in July 2025, a kind young man brought Ranger to us after finding him weak and unwell in a carpark. We discovered he was in kidney failure — but his rescuer didn’t walk away. With treatment, patience, and a lot of dedication, Ranger slowly began to improve.
Over time, the ongoing demands of managing a chronic illness became too much for one person to bear alone. Trusting us to carry on where he left off, his rescuer made the heartbreaking decision to surrender Ranger into our care.
And we weren’t about to let him down. Ranger became part of our family — we took over his medical care, and one of our own vet nurses opened her home to foster him. He went from lying sick in a carpark to having warm blankets, regular meals, and a team of people who genuinely look forward to seeing him every day.
Ranger may have kidney failure, but he also has something truly special: people who chose not to give up on him. ❤️

Ever wondered why your dog does certain “strange” things? 🐾
Most habits are completely normal rooted in instinct, communication, or emotional regulation. But some can be early signs of stress, discomfort, or underlying health issues.
Knowing the difference matters.
Nothing can stop us from seeing the cuties! ☺️ 🐈

Cats may be quiet, but their body language speaks volumes. Here’s how to read the signs:
• Tail upright & quivering: Happy and excited 🎉
• Flattened ears: Scared or feeling threatened 😿
• Slow blinking: Trust and affection (a cat “kiss”) 😻
• Puffed-up tail & arched back: Frightened or defensive ⚡
Learning these signals helps you understand your cat better and build a stronger bond ❤️

Meet Shorty 🤍
When Shorty was 5 years old, his future was uncertain. He was labelled “aggressive” and was just hours away from being euthanised. But we saw something different, a dog who was scared, hurt, and desperate for a chance.
The beginning wasn’t easy. Shorty didn’t trust easily. He would growl, snap, and retreat when he felt threatened. Some days were frustrating, some days heartbreaking, but we never gave up. Slowly, with patience, consistency, and lots of love, he began to change. Small victories like a wagging tail, a tentative cuddle, a playful bark had reminded us that trust could grow if given the time and care it deserved.
Over the years, Shorty transformed. The dog who once hid in fear became a joyful, loving companion. He learned to play, to relax, and to share his affection freely. He became part of our family in every sense, teaching us daily about resilience, patience, and unconditional love.
Now, at 13 years old, Shorty has spent 8 wonderful years in our home. Every quirky habit, every joyful zoom around the house, every moment of calm beside us tells the story of how far he’s come. From a misunderstood, fearful dog to the gentle, loyal soul we love today. Shorty’s journey is proof that every life deserves a chance.

🐾 Ever wondered what makes your pet so unique? 🧬
Just like humans, pets can undergo DNA testing to uncover valuable insights about their breed, health, and traits. Whether you have a mixed-breed companion or simply want to know your pet better, a DNA test can reveal their ancestry, highlight potential genetic health risks, and explain their unique features and behaviours.
Understanding your pet’s DNA can help you make more informed decisions about their care from diet and exercise to long-term health monitoring. 💙
🏥 We offer pet DNA testing right here at MyFamilyVet Clinic.

BabyBaby came into Dr Vanessa’s life in the most unexpected way.
She was brought into the clinic after being knocked down by a car — a stray shipyard dog, frightened and in pain. On examination, it was discovered that she was heavily pregnant, carrying nine puppies.
She was kept in the clinic to recover, and two weeks later, with a little assistance and a lot of strength on her part, she gave birth to all nine.
Finding homes for the puppies was a journey in itself. In the end, Dr Vanessa adopted BabyBaby and one little pup who couldn’t find a home. With her limited creativity with names, she named him PuppyBaby — and that’s how this mother-and-son duo became part of her family.
For the past 13 years, they’ve been by her side, growing up, growing old, and filling her life with quiet companionship and unconditional love.
One question she gets asked all the time is: “Does PuppyBaby know BabyBaby is his mum?”
Honestly… she thinks he does.
Science tells us that puppies are born with a strong ability to recognize their mother through scent — it’s their very first language. During the early weeks of life, this bond is reinforced through nursing, warmth, and constant contact. Studies show that dogs can retain familiar scent memories for years, and they’re incredibly good at recognizing individuals they’ve formed early bonds with.
While we can’t say they understand “mother” in the same way humans do, long-term attachment, comfort-seeking, and social bonding are very real in dogs. And when she looks at the way PuppyBaby follows her, rests beside her, and simply chooses her… it’s hard not to believe there’s something deeper there.
Maybe it’s instinct. Maybe it’s memory. Maybe it’s just love.
Whatever it is, it’s been one of the sweetest experiences of her life — watching this mother and son grow up, and grow old, together.
From a roadside accident to a home filled with warmth — BabyBaby’s story is one she will always carry with her.
