It Takes All of Us: Many Hands, Lasting Change 🤝🌍💚

This , held on World Environment Day, we celebrated how far we’ve come on our sustainability journey with our staff, patients, retail partners, and volunteers. Thanks to our collective efforts, NUH is the first hospital worldwide to achieve the JCI–Geneva Sustainability Centre’s Healthcare Sustainability Certification.

Our COO, Jeremy Lee, and CMB, Adj Prof Mark Puhaindran, marked a proud milestone by launching our expanded Green Corner. This enhanced space features a digital walkthrough of how sustainability is woven into everyday patient care and an interactive game that brings to life how every small, mindful choice can help protect the environment.

Event highlights included:
🌡️ A talk by A/Prof Jason Lee on what a warmer world means for us and how we can adapt together
🏆 Recognition of winners of our Incredible Care for Our Planet Awards, who have championed sustainability in their daily work
🛍️ An eco-fest showcasing how eco-friendly choices and reducing single-use disposables can drive meaningful impact, including our Harvest booth, where fresh local produce from our community gardens was shared. These gardens bring together staff and volunteers while contributing to a cooler, greener environment.

Thank you to everyone who made this event a success! We hope it inspires your next green action. ♻️

Four decades of medicine, mentorship, and milestones — all celebrated in one unforgettable evening.

Themed “Celebrating our Legacy, Inspiring our Future”, the gala dinner commemorated two remarkable milestones — 40 years of NUH Medicine and 120 years of NUS Medicine. Graced by our Guest of Honour, Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, the evening paid tribute to the distinguished individuals, pivotal moments, and groundbreaking ideas that have shaped the Department and its specialties through the decades.

It was a night to honour the pioneers who laid the foundation, celebrate the colleagues who continue to carry the legacy forward, and inspire the next generation who will shape the future of medicine in Singapore.

Here’s to the Department of Medicine — past, present, and future.

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan is Permanent Secretary (National Research & Development) and Permanent Secretary (Public Sector Science and Technology Policy and Plans Office). He is also former Head of Department of Medicine and Chairman, Medical Board at the National University Hospital, as well as the former Dean of NUS Medicine.

🚨 Strengthening Emergency Preparedness Through Collaboration 🚨

Earlier today, NUH jointly conducted a Code Blue Exercise with smrtsingapore right at our doorstep, at Kent Ridge MRT station.

The exercise led by the Emergency Medicine Department and supported by our Security team was designed to validate our operational preparedness during a life-threatening medical emergency within the station.

These efforts continue to strengthen our ability to deliver timely, coordinated care when it matters most. 👏

“Motherhood is instinctual”. But... is it really?

For our final post in the Maternal Mental Health Month series, we sat down with our psychiatrist, Dr Sue Ying, to debunk this misconception that many mothers may carry, and how it leaves them feeling like they have somehow "fallen short".

To all mummies out there, motherhood isn't something you're supposed to magically know, it’s a work in progress.

Remember, your mental health matters too!

Our recent From Bump to Baby pregnancy forum brought together more than 200 expectant parents for a day of learning and connection with our specialists from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G).

Through insightful talks and a lively Q&A session, participants gained valuable, evidence-based knowledge to navigate their pregnancy journey with greater confidence.

Hands-on workshops ran by our physiotherapist, nurses, and nutritionist gave participants practical skills to take home, covering prenatal and postnatal exercises, baby massage, maternal care, as well as nutrition for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors for their strong support, and to all participants for making the afternoon such a meaningful one!

Liver cancer often develops silently.

During a routine follow‑up for fatty liver disease in 2018, 74‑year‑old Mr Foo Say Nong was diagnosed with early‑stage liver cancer despite feeling well. The tumour was successfully removed at NUH. In 2025, while participating in a liver cancer genetics research study, advanced imaging detected another unrelated tumour at an early stage. It was treated promptly, and Mr Foo is now in remission.

A new research study by NUH, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University Cancer Institute, Singapore - NCIS and A*STAR found that liver cancer risk increases when genetic factors are combined with metabolic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity. Men with a high‑risk genetic variant may face up to nine‑fold higher risk, particularly when these conditions are present.

“This highlights the potential of considering genetic factors together with information from routine medical checks, rather than viewing them separately,” said Adj A/Prof Daniel Huang, the study’s Principal Investigator. Such insights may support more targeted, risk‑based screening strategies in the future to identify people at higher risk of liver cancer.

Most colorectal cancers don't start as cancer. They start as tiny polyps, quietly growing where no one can see them.

The good news? These polyps can be removed via colonoscopy before they become cancerous. That window of opportunity depends on how thoroughly a colonoscopy is performed.

That's why NUH developed the Colonoscopy Quality Metrics Dashboard: an AI-powered tool that automatically links colonoscopy findings with pathology reports, giving doctors faster, clearer feedback on their practice.

The result? More thorough and consistent colonoscopies, earlier detection, and a stronger line of defence against one of Singapore's most common cancers.

How do we do more with less — without compromising care?
It's a question our leaders addressed at the recent HealthTechX Asia 2026.

Chief Nurse Adj A/Prof Karen Koh highlighted how nursing is being reimagined through our Prioritise, Level resources, Upskill, Support (PLUS) model with AI, automation and technology as enablers, with 62 nurse-led activities already underway and a clear pipeline of 100 by 2030—so our nurses can practise at the top of their licence and focus on what matters most: patient care.

Adj A/Prof Michael Ong, Chief of Allied Health & Pharmacy, shared that AI-driven transformation in Allied Health & Pharmacy is not about technology alone—it requires aligning mindset, metrics and manpower; readying a workforce for redesign, grounding change in clear measurement of value and productivity, and optimising roles to practise at the top of scope—so that efficiency and quality can scale sustainably under rising healthcare demand.

We look forward to continued collaboration with fellow health and technology leaders to build a more resilient, innovative, and sustainable healthcare system.

Mothers who have heard this voice in your head before, you're definitely not alone.

This week, we're unpacking a common motherhood myth – the pressure to do everything yourself. We're exploring how this belief can impact mothers, and why support matters more than perfection.

Because here's the truth: asking for help can be one of the strongest things you do for both you and your baby.
