GIZ was formed on 1 January 2011, bringing together the long-standing expertise of DED, GTZ and InWEnt. GIZ opened an office in Dar es Salaam in 1982.
Germany has been engaged in international cooperation with Tanzania on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1975. At present, there are 21 seconded members of staff, 13 development advisors and six CIM experts, working with their respective partners to promote sustainable development in Tanzania. es Dar es Salaam and Arusha (EAC), GIZ’s activities are concentrated in the Lindi, Mbeya, Mtwara and Tanga regions. Although peaceful and politically stable, Tanzania is facing various social and economic development challenges. Despite the urgent need to improve the business and investment climate, there is a lack of progress here, partly due to the ongoing crisis in the country’s energy and transport sectors. A shortage of skilled health workers, underfunding and a lack of sexual and reproductive health services all contribute to the population’s poor health status. Through the Tanzanian- German Programme to Support Health (TGPSH), GIZ is assisting the Government of Tanzania to improve the quality of, and access to, health services. Efficient and environmentally sound drinking water and sanitation services
Tanzania’s population is poorly supplied with water, and sanitation systems are inadequate, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. There are various reasons for this: the country’s water and sanitation utilities are inefficient and the sector is not regulated to a satisfactory degree. Technical training is therefore being provided in order to achieve a sustainable water supply. GIZ is also assisting the Ministry of Water to establish the legal and regulatory frameworks which are a prerequisite for balanced water policies. The advisory services provided to the Government are increasingly addressing climate-relevant aspects of water supply and sanitation as well. Energy
An Energy Sector Support Programme is currently in preparation. Scheduled to commence in June 2013, it will focus on renewable energy and the management of the recently discovered natural gas fields in southern Tanzania. Support to the EAC integration process
This programme aims to build the capacities of the East African Community’s secretariat to support the development of the EAC common market. It focuses especially on organisational development and measures to improve the secretariat’s economic policy competencies. In cooperation with KFW and the Frankfurt Zoological Society, GIZ is also implementing a natural resource management project in Dar es Salaam and two districts near the Serengeti National Park. By ensuring that local communities can share to a greater extent in the benefits and revenue derived from nature conservation and tourism, the project aims to increase their acceptance of the protected areas and thus contribute to the conservation of significant ecosystems.
