As we welcome Alaska Native Heritage Month, we celebrate the strength and resilience of our Afognak Alutiiq people. Our heritage is more than a story of the past, it is alive in our language, our traditions, our songs, our dances, and the deep connection we share with our homelands.

We honor those who came before us, whose courage and perseverance made it possible for us to stand proudly in who we are today. We celebrate those who continue to carry our culture forward and the next generations who will keep our traditions, identity, and spirit alive.

May this month remind us that our roots run deep, our voices matter, and our culture is a gift that deserves to be celebrated, protected, and passed on.

The 2026 Future Leaders Summit brought youth together for a day of connection, learning, and cultural engagement! Students had the opportunity to meet peers, discuss important AFN resolutions impacting Elders and youth, and learn about scholarships, youth programs, and future opportunities.

A highlight of the day was guest speaker Koniag Education Foundation (KEF) Executive Director Teri Mahle, who made learning about KEF scholarships fun, engaging, and informative. Students also enjoyed hands-on cultural learning through YoYo making with Cultural Affairs Director Loren Anderson and Yupik Artist Eva Bryant, along with learning more about the programs and opportunities available through Afognak Native Corporation, Koniag, Inc., and the Kodiak Area Native Association.

From meaningful conversations to hands-on activities, the summit was a great opportunity for youth to build connections, explore their future goals, and learn about resources to support their success. Quyanaa to everyone who helped make the Future Leaders Summit a memorable and impactful experience!
