Being in the community is crucial to implementing changes that our residents want to see. I went on an inter-agency walk along the Greenmount and 25th St. corridor with representatives from DOT, DHCD, MONSE, MOHS, DPW, and the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs. Traffic calming, addressing vacant storefronts, along with illegal dumping were some of the key issues we were able to discuss, and create plans on how to effectively address. I am grateful for the ongoing partnerships with our city agencies, and I look forward to continue doing inter-agency walks in other neighborhoods in our district.

I am proud to have served as the keynote speaker at the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Navigating Your Personal and Academic Future Summit 2026. Our senior advisor Marly, was also a panelist and shared about her career journey working in government. Our youth need mentors, they want to be a part of a community, and deserve to have leaders fighting for their right to a prosperous future. It is exciting to witness the growth of our next generation and be able to uplift them as they become change makers in their own right, si se puede!

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dolores Huerta. She was a fierce pioneer within the feminist movement, labor rights movements, and civil rights movement. Huerta was nothing short of extraordinary and the impact of her advocacy work around equality, fair treatment, and social change can be seen through the leaders that came after her. As we reflect in her legacy, I want us to remember and continue upholding the values Huerta dedicated her life’s work to.

Tomorrow at 12:30 pm, the Education, Youth, and Older Adult committee will be holding a hearing on older adult apartment buildings, particularly those run by the RAD and HABC programs. While we’ve done some work in passing the Rental Dwelling Health and Safety Enforcement Act, more may need to be done. But first we want to talk with public housing providers. The hearing takes place in City Council Chamber, and the committee will be hearing testimony so please consider joining us. If you know someone who may be interested in participating, please let them know as well.

Early Voting Week continues until Thursday, October 29th and Election Day is November 3rd! Make your plan to vote, and use this an opportunity to teach the younger members of your community about civic engagement. My daughter, Teresa, and I went to the League for People with Disabilities so that she could watch me cast my vote! It’s a tradition for her to join us and we can’t wait to be there when she votes for the first time in a few more years. Voting is our right, and many have fought for it, so it’s important that our young people learn how crucial our votes are especially in this moment.

We want to warn our residents about a rise in home repair scams, and what to watch out for. Before hiring a contractor, verify the contractor’s license with the state, get a detailed written estimate on company letterhead, and never pay the full amount up front. Be cautious of unsolicited offers and high-pressure tactics. Protect your home and your hard-earned money! For more information on this, check out our website.

It’s vital for our residents who are survivors of human trafficking to have a safe place to heal, and are able to receive supportive resources. During my time at the Maryland Human Trafficking Professionals Seminar, I had the opportunity to learn more about how counties around the state assist survivors and how to identify potential victims. Human trafficking can take on many forms, and it’s important that impacted individuals have access to critical resources such as housing, legal services and mental health care. As the co-chair of Baltimore’s Human Trafficking Collaborative, I want to continue learning so that we can advocate effectively for our survivors.
