Reminder Tomorrow:
CALABASAS RESIDENTS: WE NEED YOUR VOICES! 🚨
Our community needs to show up and speak out about the ongoing and frequent power outages affecting Calabasas.
đź“… Wednesday, October 28th
đź•– 7:00 PM
📍 Calabasas City Hall or via Zoom (https://cityofcalabasas.zoom.us/.../WN...)
The City Council will be discussing the most recent prolonged power outage, the ongoing problems with frequent outages, and what actionable steps can be taken to address these issues.
I have heard your frustration loud and clear on social media, and I have experienced these outages firsthand. But now I need my colleagues on the City Council and our City staff to understand the magnitude of this problem, how deeply these outages are affecting our community, and why we need to be involved in making changes.
I cannot stress enough how important resident participation is.
If only a handful of people speak up, the full impact of these outages may not be understood, and this issue may not receive the attention and urgency it deserves.
I am only one voice on the City Council. We need yours, too.
Whether you lost power for hours or days, had to throw away food, missed work, experienced medical concerns, or are simply fed up with the repeated outages, your experience matters.
🗣️ SHOWING UP REALLY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Please join us in person at Calabasas City Hall or via Zoom.
📧 CAN'T ATTEND? PLEASE EMAIL your experiences to: [email protected] and your email will be included as part of the public record.
Please don't assume someone else will speak up.
I've heard you. Now I need the entire City Council and City staff to hear you, too.
Your voice matters. Your experience matters. And together, we can push for the changes our community deserves.

After speaking with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), I encourage residents to file complaints about their experiences using the link below:

https://www.cpuc.ca.gov/consumer-support/file-a-complaint/utility-complaint

I also urge residents to include a request that the CPUC reevaluate the current reimbursement rules, taking into consideration the financial hardships and unexpected expenses these prolonged outages continue to cause.

More information will be coming soon about a City Council meeting to discuss these ongoing concerns. I will also share information about the backup power requirements for wireless providers and how communication services can remain available during outages. I am still researching this.

Our community deserves reliable service, accountability, and fair consideration of the impacts these outages have on residents and businesses.

Calabasas Three-Day Power Outage: What Happened and What Needs to Change

Thousands of Calabasas residents spent nearly three days without power, and many also lost internet and cell phone service.

We all understand the importance of preventing wildfires and keeping our community safe during high-wind events. But how are we keeping residents safe if they cannot make a phone callor receive emergency alerts during a potential emergency?

This is especially frustrating because many of these same concerns were supposed to be addressed following the Woolsey Fire in 2018.

Beyond the communication failures, the impacts were significant. Businesses were forced to close, residents lost refrigerators full of food, schools closed, parents scrambled for childcare, and families spent days without reliable information about when their power would return, even after the winds had subsided.

I also want to acknowledge our local SCE representative, who worked tirelessly to obtain updates throughout the outage. Although we did not receive the information we had hoped for, she did everything she could to get answers. My concerns are at the larger systems and processes that need improvement.

So where do we go from here?

I know these are complicated issues, and the solutions will not be easy. But I care deeply about our community and believe we must continue pushing for meaningful changes.

I've outlined my observations, concerns, and the next steps I am pursuing in the attached document. I encourage you to read it.

We will also be discussing these issues at an upcoming City Council meeting, and I will share the details once scheduled.

Public safety cannot end with shutting off the electricity. Residents must also be able to call for help, receive emergency alerts, and stay connected when they need it most. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BlKWbcr7APaCL4T6Der9Ds7SPBlbem5b/view?usp=sharing

For the thousands of residents who have been without power for what will be nearly 48 hours, the situation is even more concerning for those who have also lost internet and cell phone service.

My greatest concern is for residents who may be unable to call 911 or receive critical emergency alerts. These are serious public safety issues that were supposed to be addressed following the Woolsey Fire.

AT&T has indicated that it will not deploy a Cell on Wheels (COW) during a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event. I have reached out to our County Supervisor’s office for assistance and have also been in communication with Spectrum to explore other options.

Power outages are difficult enough, but when residents lose their ability to communicate or receive emergency information, it becomes a much larger public safety concern.

Residents must have a reliable way to call for help and receive emergency alerts, especially during the very conditions that prompted these power shutoffs in the first place.
