Happy Labor Day from the Cedar Hill Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 3463! 🇺🇸

Today, we recognize the working men and women whose dedication, sacrifice, and hard work have helped build and strengthen our communities. For firefighters, paramedics, and EMS professionals, Labor Day is also a reminder that while many enjoy a well-earned day off, first responders across our nation remain on duty—ready to answer the call.

We are proud to stand alongside our brothers and sisters of the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters and the International Association of Fire Fighters , advocating for safe working conditions, fair treatment, and the resources necessary to provide the highest level of service to the communities we protect.

To our members serving Cedar Hill today, and to working families everywhere: thank you for the work you do every day.

Strong unions. Strong firefighters. Strong communities.

Happy Labor Day! 🇺🇸🚒

Prayers for our brothers and sisters of Odessa.

It is with a heavy heart that Odessa Fire Rescue announces the passing of Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Handlin.

Eric passed away at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2026. He had just completed 25 years of service with OFR on July 2 and was 53 years old.

Eric dedicated a significant part of his life to serving OFR and the Odessa community, and his loss is deeply felt by his family, friends, current members, and our retired OFR family.

Services are being planned and will be announced over the next few days as those details are finalized.

Please keep Eric’s family, friends, and the entire OFR family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

Though denials of overall injuries may be down, the delays in quality treatment and therapies are highly common. The third party provider for Cedar Hill is no better and has been warned many times of their inequities. We hope Caleb gets his treatments approved in Fort Worth and we stand with our brothers and sisters at Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Local 440 as they pursue better care for their members.

A decade ago, nine out of 10 firefighter line-of-duty injury claims were denied by Texas municipalities and their workers comp carriers. We’ve worked with Texas legislators to improve the system and denials are far less common now, but cases like that of seriously injured Fort Worth firefighter Caleb Halvorson remain infuriating. Delaying his treatment was inexcusable. Thanks to Representative Jared Patterson and John McQueeney for Texas for your support of Texas firefighters. We'll keep working until the system does not ever require community outrage for approval of proper treatment of line-of-duty injuries. With Fort Worth Professional Firefighters Local 440.

Rest easy brother. You were advocate for us and beyond. Thank you for being a bright light in so many lives.

The Lewisville Fire Fighters are heartbroken by the loss of our brother and friend, Michael Swope. Michael was a dedicated firefighter/paramedic and Field Training Officer for the Lewisville Fire Department. He was known for his great sense of humor and the way he could instantly lift the mood with his laugh. More than that, Michael always looked out for his fellow firefighters and made sure everyone around him was taken care of.

At home, Michael was a loving husband who cherished his wife and a devoted father who took immense pride in his children. His family was his foundation, and his love for them drove everything he did.

Please join us in keeping the Swope family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.
