It’s that time of year again! BUF of Michigan is exposing our youth to financial literacy at the Federal Reserve Bank and welcoming back the one and only Gail Perry-Mason, just like we do each year.

Thank you to Comerica Bank and everyone who helped make this year’s Financial Literacy Fair possible. Our youth deserve a head start in building wealth, confidence, and financial knowledge.

Here’s to another great year!

As February and March come to a close, honoring both Black History Month and Women’s History Month, BUF of Michigan proudly continues its tradition of recognizing impactful leaders who are shaping history in real time.

This month, BUF of MI is honored and privileged to recognize Mayor Mary Sheffield, a historic and transformative leader, as highlighted by a brilliant and talented student from Cass Technical High School.

“Hello, my name is and I am a 12th grader at Cass Technical High School. On behalf of BUF of MI, we would like to continue celebrating Black History by recognizing the Honorable Mary Sheffield, Mayor of the City of Detroit and the city’s first woman to hold the office. Prior to becoming mayor, Ms. Sheffield served on the Detroit City Council, representing District 5 and later serving as Council President. Her career in public service has focused on housing, neighborhood development, and economic opportunity. Her leadership marks a historic milestone for Detroit and reflects the continued impact of Black women in local government. On behalf of young people, like myself, may her tenure leave a positive mark on the City of Detroit.”

BUF of Michigan celebrates not only the legacy of Black history and the power of women’s leadership, but also the voices of young scholars who recognize greatness and are inspired to become it.

On behalf of BUF of Michigan, we would like to thank each of you for participating in our Future Docs of Tomorrow: SINORMS Academy since its inception in 2019.
Over 175 underrepresented youths have benefited. Young people are exposed to a myriad of specialties, enhance their STEM skills and medical terminology, immerse themselves in lab and research experiences, and gain opportunities to interact with expert professionals, such as yourselves.

This was truly the dream of Dr. Silas Norman, Jr., a Wayne State University Professor for whom the program was named. He envisioned the day more students from urban communities saw themselves as future doctors.

Thank you again for helping to prepare the next generation of Doctors!

BUF of Michigan is proud to continue our tradition of honoring community leaders whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on our city and beyond. As part of our Black History recognition, our student Mercer Brown, 11th grader at Loyola High School, joined us to make a special tribute to Warren C. Evans, Wayne County Executive, for his decades of public service to the people of Michigan.

Mr. Evans has served as Wayne County Sheriff, Detroit Police Chief, and currently as Wayne County Executive since 2015. His lifelong commitment to leadership in public safety and county government represents the strength, excellence, and influence of African American leadership in shaping our communities and local municipalities.

Through moments like this, BUF of Michigan continues to provide our students with opportunities to learn history, honor excellence, and personally recognize the leaders who paved the way.

Special thank you to Mercer Brown for representing the next generation of leadership as he shared his appreciation:
“As a young citizen here in Detroit, I thank you for your many years of diligently serving the community.”

We’re proud to have sponsored a field trip last month for our BUF of Michigan SINORM students.Students had the opportunity to attend Robot Wars, where curator Arthur Cartwright made sure every moment was engaging, educational, and unforgettable.

Experiences like this help expose our youth to innovation, technology, and future career pathways — and we’re proud to continue creating opportunities that inspire the next generation.

We are proud of our students who attended the Youth Careers Fair at Fellowship Chapel.

Students from the BUF E.Y.E.S. Program, including our dedicated SINORM students, participated in this great event, continuing to take advantage of opportunities that support their growth, education, and future goals.

We appreciate the leadership of Dr. McClain and the continued commitment to creating spaces where our youth can learn, grow, and be inspired.
