May brings several opportunities to recognize and celebrate the diverse communities, cultures, and experiences that shape Grand Rapids.
This month, we acknowledge:
• Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
• Mental Health Awareness Month
• Jewish American Heritage Month
• National Mobility Awareness Month
We encourage community members to take time to learn, reflect, support local organizations, and engage with the many events and resources happening throughout our city this month.
Local resources to explore include the Grand Rapids Asian-Pacific Foundation, NAMI West Michigan, the Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids, and Disability Advocates of Kent County.
Together, we continue building a more connected and equitable community for all.

Families are invited to explore the hidden world of Grand Rapids’ water systems through two free, hands‑on Water Pool‑ooza events that offer rare behind‑the‑scenes tours, interactive activities and fun learning experiences for ages 9 and up. From discovering how our drinking water is drawn from Lake Michigan and made safe at the Lake Michigan Filtration Plant on May 30, to seeing how wastewater is cleaned and returned to the environment during guided tours of the Water Resource Recovery Facility on June 13, these events give residents an exciting look at the essential systems that keep our community healthy. Both events include expert-led activities, insights into water‑sector careers, and practical ways families can help protect local water resources.
