Why only through November? 🤔

Sometimes, every little bit counts. This is one of those times. We voted to suspend the gas tax until November 30th. Gas is expensive, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are on the way. Every little bit counts, and the government should be figuring out how to take less. My hope is to lower AND cap the gas tax so North Carolina is always in the top seven nationally for fuel tax.

Should Cabarrus County residents be forced to pay higher power bills to subsidize datacenters?

That's exactly what Republican State House Rep. Brian Echevarria voted for. Last year, Echevarria voted YES on Senate Bill 266, a bill supported by Duke Energy, which gave the corporation legal permission to raise North Carolina residents' power bills higher than ever in order to support new electricity demand - mostly from datacenters.

Duke Energy itself says that 80% of the anticipated increase in electricity demand statewide will come from datacenters. To meet datacenters’ enormous thirst for energy, Duke Energy wants to build more: more gas pipelines ripping up family farmland, more gas plants belching pollution, and more coal.

To pay the bill, lawmakers like Republican Brian Echevarria obeyed Duke Energy’s demand to force everyday working families across the state to foot the bill. We pay higher rates for electricity from Duke Energy to meet demand by more and more datacenters.

But that’s not all.

After Governor Josh Stein vetoed SB 266, Brian Echevarria voted along with every single Republican member of the North Carolina State House to override his veto as well.

You can look up the full details of SB 266, as well as a complete list which North Carolina lawmakers voted for and against it, here: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2025/s266

Today, I received word that state legislators in Raleigh have again moved to make city council elections in Kannapolis partisan and to happen in even numbered years.

I will again state - I am firmly against this.

Partisan elections in our city will force partisanship into our daily city council activities. Actions of our council will become what’s best for “the party” rather than for us. A partisan label will immediately become the most obvious thing about a candidate, rather than what they are running on. Any candidate running for office will be forced to defend their party choice rather than advocating for their own personal stances. It will also force our elections to hold partisan primaries, meaning anyone registered as unaffiliated, you will HAVE to register with a party unless you are able to obtain enough signatures to run as unaffiliated. Even if you hate both political parties but dream of being a public servant, you will have to make a choice.

This will also move elections to even numbered years, placing our mayoral and city council elections at the very bottom of the ballot along with voting for president, senators, congress, governor, attorney general, and the list can go on. This will also give every council member an extra unelected year on their term.

This is not the right move for our city and I hope that our local leaders will stand with me in opposing it. I expect this to happen or change quickly.
