𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, an annual observance that shines a spotlight on the crucial role of family caregivers in our society.

It acknowledges the physical, emotional, and financial sacrifices made by more than 50 million caregivers who provide care to family members with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or age-related conditions.

This month-long campaign raises awareness about the challenges faced by family caregivers, celebrates their dedication, and provides resources and support to help them in their caregiving roles.

The 2026 theme is “Care Connects Us”.

We're wrapping up 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 with an issue we hear about on a fairly regular basis - facility staff attending to their phones instead of residents. The primary complaint is staff who are distracted by their phones (or wearing earbuds) missing or ignoring call lights and resident needs.

How to address this concern?
• Talk to Administration: As with all care concerns, the first step we recommend is speaking directly with the social worker, Director of Nursing (DON), or the administrator. Report specific dates, times, and staff members and how the resident's care was impacted.
• Contact the Long-Term Care Ombudsman: If you don't receive a satisfactory response from staff, contact your local ombudsman (our agency in Lancaster County) Every region in the country has a local ombudsman program designed to advocate for residents and investigate quality-of-care complaints confidentially.
• File a Complaint with State Licensing: If the facility fails to address the issue, you can escalate the matter to state authorities. In PA, nursing homes are licensed by PA Dept of Health. Personal Care and Assisted Living facilities are licensed by PA Dept of Human Services. Their contact info is below.

Even when family caregivers have access to help, many still come up with excuses to turn it down. Learning to accept support and assistance will ensure you can have a life apart from the needs of your care receiver.
