Pillsbury United Communities We co-create enduring change towards a just society. We believe that people deserve a voice in decisions that affect them. This is what justice means.

We believe that cultural understanding is essential to social connection. We believe that communities get stronger when opportunity is shared. We believe that a just society is one where everybody has power - no exceptions. For 140 years, we have put these beliefs into action. Here we lay foundations for full, healthy lives for children and families. Here we build places of creativity and connection, where strong voices are nurtured and stories are amplified. Here we create pathways to a prosperous future, from education to jobs to economic mobility. The opportunity to flourish regardless of zip code, age, ability, or background. The power to own our future on our own terms. For us, enduring change is not a lofty vision, but an ongoing pursuit, unfolding day by day, need by need, and block by block. To achieve it, you have to live it. Justice lives here.

"When communities face uncertainty, artists often help us see what institutions cannot: the possibilities that exist beyond the challenges of today. Through storytelling, creativity, and cultural expression, artists have long helped communities find their voices, reclaim their narratives, and imagine a different future.

In this month's blog post, Mike Hoyt, Senior Director of Pillsbury Creative Commons, reminds us that the arts are not simply a luxury to be enjoyed when it's convenient, but a critical part of how communities connect and make change.

Thank you, Mike, for offering such a wonderful and thought-provoking piece in celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month!

PUC’s President, Signe Harriday, was excited to join community development leaders at LISC Twin Cities' 5-year celebration of the Community Asset Transition Fund. This fund was established to increase community ownership after the murder of George Floyd and has provided over $30 million in financing to seventeen projects.

One such project was our very own Pillsbury Creative Commons building, which has helped us to serve our community by offering a flexible space for neighbors to gather, create, advance narrative and more!

Signe remarked, “As a 147-year-old organization, we hold history, and we are co-creating what is next; responding to the moment, and building for the future. For me, the real success of Pillsbury Creative Commons is not simply that we built something. But it’s that we helped make possible a community vision that is much bigger than any one project.”

We were grateful to share the space with so many other incredible partners and community organizations: McKnight Foundation, The Bush Foundation, The Minneapolis Foundation, Hennepin County Government, and Neighborhood Development Center.

Every year, more than 100 children in Hennepin County are found to have high blood lead levels, high enough to damage their health. Lead exposure is particularly dangerous for young children and can lead to brain and nervous system damage, slowed growth and development, and learning and behavior problems.

But there's good news—lead poisoning is 100% preventable.

🏠 Hennepin County's Lead Control Program offers:
âś… Free lead testing for homes built before 1978
đź’° Up to $15,000 in grants for eligible families to remove lead hazards
🛠️ Expert assistance from certified lead risk assessors

At the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, we are reflecting on a great summer as we launch school year programs!

In partnership with Step Up Youth Employment Program, Minneapolis, Xcel Energy, Everyone On, and Best Buy, PUC provided 29 paid youth internships across two cohorts: Cinematography and Girls + Femmes in STEM.

In the Cinematography cohort, interns learned filmmaking- including directing. editing, sound, lighting, script-writing, and acting. Their summer-long project was a collaborative film is called "Sunken Sun", a dystopian short film that explored themes like environmental justice.

In Girls + Femmes in STEM, interns learned how to use professional cameras and digital photo editing, printmaking, and coding. At the PUC Summer Showcase, they presented coding projects with microbots, graphic designs , photo collages, 3d prints, and a crochet project!

We are so grateful for all of the ways that our talented and hardworking interns showed up this summer, and we can't wait to see what the coming school year has in store!

"Work has always been about more than earning a paycheck. At its best, work creates independence, builds confidence, connects us to one another, and gives people the opportunity to imagine a different future for themselves and their families.

During Workforce Development Month, we celebrate the people who make those possibilities real: young people stepping into their first jobs, workers building new skills, employers opening doors, mentors sharing what they know, and community organizations connecting talent and opportunity."

Thank you to Julie Graves, Senior Director of Youth and Future Focus, and Andre Samples, Workforce Training Director for Pillsbury Creative Commons, for lending their voices to help us think critically about the future of workforce development!

If you or a family member has experienced domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking, you shouldn't have to choose between your safety and your job.

Minnesota Paid Leave includes Safety Leave: paid, job-protected time off for Minnesota workers who need to respond to a safety crisis. That can include finding safe housing, getting medical or mental health care, working with an advocate or attorney, going to court, or making a safety plan.

Your privacy is protected throughout the process. Your employer will only know that you took Family Leave, not the reason why.

You deserve to feel safe. And you deserve support getting there.

If you need help connecting with a Safety Leave certifier or advocate, call the Minnesota Day One® crisis line: 1-866-223-1111.
