This week in 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership of the nonviolent civil rights movement. At 35, he was the youngest person to receive the honor at the time. He pledged his prize money to continue to advance the movement, because for him the work was never finished. Today, the work continues. Protecting voting rights, equal opportunity, and fair treatment under the law are on all of us, so let's honor his legacy and show up! ULTC is an early voting site, Oct. 20th - Nov.2nd, 7 days/week! Check out our website or social media for hours.

Last week in 1889, Claude A. Barnett was born in Sanford, Florida. Barnett founded the Associated Negro Press (ANP), the first and only Black-owned news wire service in the United States. The ANP gave Black newspapers across the country access to national and international news at a time when mainstream wire services overlooked Black communities (Sentinel News Service, 2017).
Before social media, before the 24/7 news cycle, Barnett built the foundation for Black journalism to speak for itself. Today, there are more than 200 Black newspapers in business according to the National Newspaper Publishers Association (2025). 📰
