The Scandinavian Heritage Park, Minot, ND a beautiful place to visit to remember our heritage!

Buildings, statues and monuments that celebrate the heritage of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. A full-scale replica of the Gol Stave Church, a full-scale replica of a Norwegian stabbur (storehouse) a log house built in Norway in the 1770s, a fully-functional Finnish sauna, an original windmill built by a Danish immigrant, and a 27-foot tall Swedish Dala horse are found on a 14-acre park. Other statues and monuments, and the Heritage House Museum add interest as well. Buildings are open during summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend, as able by Volunteer staff.

November 1 was National Authors Day and while there are many, many Scandinavian authors of note, we’d like to highlight some remarkable authors whose writing preserves the stories of Scandinavian heritage and the immigrant experience on the Northern Plains.

Minot’s own Barb Solberg: author of What We Leave Behind, a historical novel inspired by her Norwegian grandparents' immigration to North Dakota.

O.E. Rølvaag: Norwegian-American author of Giants in the Earth, a classic novel depicting the struggles, hardships, and hopes of Norwegian immigrants settling the Dakota prairie.

Lauraine Snelling, 2012 Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame inductee: author of numerous historical novels exploring Norwegian-American life, including the popular Red River of the North series, set in the Dakota Territory.

We highly recommend checking out these books and supporting these authors. They keep our stories alive for generations to come.

All Saints Day - a day for remembering

All Saints' Day originated in the early Christian church as a feast honoring saints and martyrs who didn’t have their own individual feast days. By the ninth century, November 1st became established as the official date throughout much of Western Christianity. November 2nd became All Souls' Day, dedicated to prayers for the deceased.

One of the most recognizable Scandinavian customs associated with the All Saints’ Day is the lighting of candles on graves. This practice became widespread in Sweden after World War II. The tradition also became common in Finland, where families visit cemeteries to place candles, flowers, and wreaths on family graves.

All Saints' Day began as a medieval Christian feast, survived the Reformation and changing religious practices, and developed into a cultural tradition that remains significant in Scandinavian communities today. Candles illuminating dark cemeteries are now a distinctive part of the season in Sweden and Finland.
