Disasters can strike quickly and history shows Tuscaloosa is not immune. Emergency Management provides leadership; planning, education and resources to protect lives, property and the environment in the event a disaster were to strike. Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management

Emergency Management is a multi-jurisdictional organization working with City of Tuscaloosa, City of Northport and Tuscaloosa County departments, agencies, volunteer organizations and the private sector to develop disaster preparedness plans, provide training and exercise activities and coordinate the overall response to large scale emergencies and disasters. One of Emergency Management's primary goals is to ensure training and information is available to both first responders and the community. We constantly prepare and practice to ensure that we are ready if a disaster strikes.

The Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency was proud to participate in the Worlds of Work (WOW), a nationally recognized, hands-on career exploration event held at Shelton State Community College. Each year, WOW introduces thousands of students across West Alabama to high-demand career fields through engaging, interactive experiences with industry professionals.

As part of the Public Safety Career Pathway, EMA staff had the opportunity to discuss emergency preparedness, severe weather, disaster response, and recovery operations with students from across the region. We enjoyed sharing how emergency management professionals work alongside first responders, local governments, schools, and community partners to help keep our communities safe before, during, and after disasters.

One of the highlights of the event was giving students the opportunity to get hands-on experience with amateur (HAM) radio communications. Many students had the chance to speak over the radios themselves and learn how this vital technology supports emergency communications when traditional systems are unavailable.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to our dedicated volunteers who assisted with setting up our displays, engaging with students throughout the event, and helping demonstrate emergency communication equipment. Your time, knowledge, and commitment helped make our exhibit an unforgettable experience for the students who visited our booth.

Events like WOW help inspire the next generation of public safety professionals and community leaders. Thank you to West Alabama Works, The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, Shelton State Community College, and all of the educators, volunteers, and industry partners who make this incredible event possible each year.

***EXPIRED POST***

Tuscaloosa County is currently under a TROPICAL STORM WARNING.

Hurricane Isaias is now a Category 3 hurricane, with landfall expected along the Gulf Coast between 7 PM and 10 PM. Damaging winds may cause downed trees and power outages across Central Alabama. Heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, with 2 to 4 inches of rain and locally higher amounts up to 5 inches possible. The tornado threat has decreased as the storm's track has shifted eastward, with much of the threat now focused on Georgia. However, a Level 1 of 5 risk for isolated, brief tornadoes remains in southern and far eastern portions of Central Alabama tonight and Saturday. Prepare for potential high winds, flooding, and power outages, and continue monitoring official forecasts.
