Healthy Start's Center for Urban Breastfeeding (CUB), in partnership with Pittsburgh Black Breastfeeding Circle (PBBC), was recently featured in an Allegheny County Health Department REACH success story highlighting our collaborative efforts to expand culturally responsive breastfeeding support and develop a pipeline of Black lactation professionals in Allegheny County. 💞
The feature, titled "Forging a Path for Breastfeeding Peer Support," showcases how CUB and PBBC are addressing barriers to lactation education and certification by providing Breastfeeding Peer Support Specialist training, Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) training sponsorships, and mentorship opportunities.
One of the most meaningful highlights is the story of Courtney Morgan, who began her journey as a first-time mother receiving breastfeeding support through CUB and PBBC. Inspired by her experience, Courtney pursued lactation education and became peer counselor, now using her knowledge and lived experience to support other breastfeeding families. 💜
This recognition reflects the power of community-based partnerships and the importance of investing in a lactation workforce that reflects the families we serve. By creating pathways from peer support to professional certification, CUB and PBBC are not only improving access to breastfeeding services, but also creating opportunities for professional growth and community leadership. 🌷🤱🏿
As we continue supporting our next cohort of CLC trainees, we remain committed to strengthening breastfeeding equity, expanding access to trusted lactation professionals, and ensuring that Black families have the resources and support needed to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
This work demonstrates that when we invest in mothers, we strengthen families, build careers, and empower entire communities.
