S*xtortion: What is it? According to National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) S*xtortion is a form of child sexual exploitation where children are threatened or blackmailed, often with the threat of sharing n**es or sexual images, by the perpetrators who demand money, additional sexual content, or sexual acts. This crime may happen when a child has shared an image with someone or when someone creates fake explicit content of the child.

SCREEN FREE SLEEPING- Create screen free times and places within your home. These places and times could include meal time and bedtime (bedrooms). Studies show that many times dangerous online activities happen at night when children are left alone with their devices in their bedrooms. Anxiety, depression and academic problems have been increasing among youth, a major contributor to this mental health crisis is sleep deprivation partly driven by screens in the bedroom at night. One in four tweens fall asleep holding their phones, losing nearly an hour of sleep compared to when the phone is kept out of the bedroom. Another helpful hint, use the build in times (on devices) also for younger children to transition away when time is up. There are various applications available to parents that can assist with monitoring screen time.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office will be posting Internet Safety Tips to help remind our community about the dangers presented on the internet and ways to avoid becoming a victim of fraud and sextortion. We are dedicated to informing the public about these dangers and combating the predators who use the internet every day to prey on innocent persons. If anyone has questions or wishes to receive more information about internet safety, please contact the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

*Please use each tip as a talking point to have a personal conversation with the young people in your lives. It will guarantee continued communications*

Today’s tip is simple but the most important:

COMMUNICATION - Please open up a line of communications with your children about internet safety. This is a very difficult topic but needs to be addressed so our youth understand there is an open door in case they become a victim. Break Down the Barriers and find a way to communicate with them. They must understand that nothing is that bad that cannot be dealt with. There is very helpful information online to assist with this. Simply perform keyword searches on your browser related to internet safety and you will be provided numerous websites that have valuable information. Specifically research S*xtortion, as this devastating crime continues to grow and too many of our youth have already taken their own lives because of it.

This week from May 3-9, 2026, we celebrate National Corrections Officers Week!

The Oneida County Jail is a 200 bed facility that houses both local and state inmates. Our Corrections Officers work in a too often thankless role with great responsibility. Officers are responsible for safety and security while continuously processing inmates in and out of the facility. They work with all aspects of the criminal justice process from the arrest, through the court process, and with our partners in community corrections and the prison system to ensure all inmates are handled appropriately.

We are thankful for the work and dedication of all of our officers here in Oneida County, as well as all those who are dedicated to this profession!!!!
