This season, the National Forest Foundation invites you to make your Christmas tree outing a little more memorable. Join the Christmas Tree Harvest challenge, powered by OuterSpatial and check in at a participating national forest or grassland to earn a limited-edition digital badge.

Here’s how to take part:

1. Download the OuterSpatial app and join the Christmas Tree Harvest challenge.
2. Find a participating location on the challenge page and get your tree-cutting permit through Recreation.gov or the local U.S. Forest Service ranger station.
3. Check in through the app while you’re there to earn your badge. One visit is all it takes.

The challenge runs October 23–December 25, 2026. Local cutting seasons may end sooner, so check cutting dates and designated harvest areas before you go.

Find your tree. Earn your badge. Then tackle that tangle of lights.

Heads up, visitors!
Glen Alton Day Use Area will be closed for construction starting October 26 through mid‑November. The upper pond and nearby fields will stay open, but the parking lot will not be accessible.
Please follow posted closure signs and stay aware of active work zones. Thanks for your patience as we make improvements!

🌀 Storm Update: The National Hurricane Center is now issuing advisories on Subtropical Storm Josephine.

This is the same low-pressure system that’s been lurking off the Mid-Atlantic coast for the past few days. It has officially detached from the coastal front and acquired some standalone tropical characteristics.

The good news? It’s expected to remain offshore and poses no threat to the Appalachians. The bad news? If you are headed to the East Coast and island shorelines there is expected to be some minor to moderate tidal flooding during high tide cycles. Dangerous seas, rough surf and rip currents are also likely.

Be aware of road closures in James River Warm Springs Ranger District. Piney Mountain Forest Service Road (FSR) 465 is closed for maintenance and will open later this week. Little Mountain Road, FSR 342 will be closed from 10/15/2026-11/15/2026. Work is underway to repair a slide that has made portions of the road impassable.
